I am so encouraged that your desire is to follow the Word of God.  Let me assure you, that as a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, you CAN obey God’s Word.  We read in Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”  You can do EVERYTHING that the Lord desires you to do because He will give you the strength to do it.  In fact, we are told in Philippians 2:13, “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.”  It is the Lord working in you to do His will and it is the Lord working in you that will give you the ability to do His good pleasure.

Let’s consider the words of the Lord in John 14:15, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.”  That’s pretty straight forward, isn’t it?  Do you love the Lord?  I assume from your question that you do love Him.  If so, then take on the responsibility of obeying His Word.  The Lord tells us in Matthew 11:30, “For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”  This is because everything the Lord requires of us; He gives us the strength to obey.  We also learn in 1 John 5:3, “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.”

Of course, this is not speaking of the Ten Commandments of the Law because “ye are not under the law, but under grace.” (Romans 16:14).  The ‘commandments’ of the Lord are His directions to us of how we should live.  “For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world.” (Titus 2:11-12).

It is so important that you recognize yourself as a servant of God.  “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?” (Romans 6:16).  If you are not being obedient to Christ your savior then you are serving another master…yourself, Satan, etc.  As believers, our desire should be to be, “servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart.” (Ephesians 6:6).

I encourage you to pray, ask the Lord to increase your love of Himself, and give you the strength to do His will.  Your love of the Lord will naturally increase as you study the Word of God.  There, you will get to know the Lord better and you will love Him deeper.  Study His Word daily!

The Lord Jesus said in John 14:21, “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.”  Surrender your will to Him and seek to do what He tells you through His Word to do.  He will empower you to do His will.  (384.4)
