Leviticus is the THIRD book of the Pentateuch (the first FIVE books of the Bible which were written by Moses). The word “Leviticus” means “Book of Levites.” The Levites were “priests” who came from the tribe of Levi. In this book God gives the “Levitical Priests” the LAWS for serving Him in the tabernacle while they made their way to the Promised Land in Canaan. These laws were made up of precise instructions regarding SACRIFICES, RITUALS and FEASTS that God ordained in order for His people, the Israelites, to worship Him. Prior to their deliverance from Egypt, they were surrounded by “heathen gods” and now, as they made their way to Canaan, they would have “God’s presence among them.” As the Levitical priests followed these laws they had the immense privilege of leading the children of Israel in worship to the “One true God.” As they worshiped God they were looked upon as “holy” which means they were “set apart” to God. There are many laws in the Book of Leviticus which taught them how to be “separate from sin” in order to approach God in His “holy sanctuary.”

Before I give you a brief outline of the Book I want to mention that all of the sacrifices, rituals and feasts were LITERALLY carried out, yet they all served as a PICTURE of the Person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ. In other words, they all FORESHADOWED the coming of Christ. We read of this in Hebrews 10:1 and 9:11-12, “For the law, having a SHADOW OF THE GOOD THINGS TO COME, and not the very image of the things, can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect….But CHRIST CAME AS HIGH PRIEST OF THE GOOD THINGS TO COME, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. Not with blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood he entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption” (NKJV).
