Enoch’s name means “dedicated,” and he was dedicated to walking with God. We read in Genesis 5:18-24, “And Jared lived an hundred sixty and two years, and he begat Enoch: And Jared lived after he begat Enoch eight hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: And all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty and two years: and he died. And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah: And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years. And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.”

Enoch was the first person to leave this world without dying. We read more about this in Hebrews 11:5. “By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.” It could be at any moment that believers today will have the same experience that Enoch had. We read in 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17, “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.” What a wonderful day that will be! Also, Hebrews 11:5 says that Enoch pleased God. Do we have the same testimony that we please God? May we be known as Christians who walk with God and please Him.

In Jude we learn that Enoch was a prophet. We learn that he prophesied about ungodly people. We read in Jude 13-19, “Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever. And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of His saints, to execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him. These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having men’s persons in admiration because of advantage.”

Enoch displayed courage by standing up to the ungodly people of his day and telling them that judgment is coming. We read in Acts 17:30-31, “And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: because He hath appointed a day, in the which He will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom He hath ordained; whereof He hath given assurance unto all men, in that He hath raised Him from the dead.” Yes, judgment is coming for this world and we can be sure of this because God has raised the Lord Jesus from the dead. May we boldly and lovingly plead with precious souls to repent of their sins and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior before it is too late.  (419.4)  (DJ)
