What are the consequences of any sin when you do them? Does it mean you have been abandoned for good by God?
I think it is good to start with a valuable and unchangeable promise of God. We read in Hebrews 13:5, “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I WILL NEVER LEAVE THEE, NOR FORSAKE THEE.” What a precious promise from the Lord to His own redeemed ones. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES will He ever leave us or forsake us. We have these incredible words from the Lord in John 10:27-29 when He said, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I GIVE UNTO THEM ETERNAL LIFE; AND THEY SHALL NEVER PERISH, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.” UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE will the Lord take away the eternal life He has given us through faith in His name.
There are times when we face consequences when we sin. There are natural consequences, such as going to jail for breaking the law. There are spiritual consequences from the Lord…but these come because the Lord loves us and wants us to resist the urge to sin. We read in Hebrews 12:6-7, “For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?” To chasten means to discipline (to educate). Discipline is akin to the word disciple, so the Lord teaches us, He disciples us, by lovingly allowing us to suffer the consequences of our sins. It is a most important way to teach us not to sin. It is the same as a loving parent disciplining their child, so they will learn to behave and obey. NEVER does the Lord condemn His children, for He has promised us in Romans 8:1, “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus…” 1 Corinthians 11:32 tells us, “But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.”
What should we, as believers on the Lord Jesus Christ, do if we commit sins? We talk to the Lord about it and acknowledge what we have done. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9). The Lord does not want us to sin, but if we do sin, He has told us to confess that sin to Him. Tell Him what we have done…put into words before Him the sin we have committed. Because He is faithful and righteous, He will not only forgive us, He will cleanse us from this unrighteousness. To sin and neglect to confess our sins can impact our fellowship with the Lord, but it will not impact our relationship with the Lord. We are His and He is ours…and that will not change. We read these unchangeable words in Song of Solomon 6:3, “I am my beloved’s, and my beloved is mine…”
Let me leave you with these comforting, encouraging words. “The LORD is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me? The LORD taketh my part with them that help me: therefore shall I see my desire upon them that hate me. It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.” (Psalm 118:6-8). (CC) (649.6)
