Can you please explain Hebrews 3:5?
Let’s read Hebrews 3:1-6, “Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus; Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house. For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house. For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God. And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after; But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.”
One major theme in this book of Hebrews is “better.” The word “better” is found 12 times in this book.
- Christ is better than the angels in chapter 1.
- Christ is better than Moses in chapters 2-3
- Christ is better than Joshua in chapter 4.
- Christ is better than the Levitical Priesthood in chapters 5-7.
- Christ brings in a better covenant in chapter 8.
- Christ brings in a better tabernacle in chapter 9.
- Christ brings in a better sacrifice in chapter 10.
- Christ is the One the Old Testament saints looked for in chapter 11.
So, here in our portion in chapter 3, we see that Christ is better than Moses. Moses was, indeed, a faithful servant in God’s house, but Christ is the Son of God over His own house. The faithfulness of Moses consisted in his faithful devotion to and proclamation of every ordinance of God, and his referring all to that Christ of whom he spoke as the One who should come after him and should be raised up from among themselves; whom they should attentively hear and obey. So, it is our Lord told the Jews in John 5:46, “For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.”
The superiority of Christ is brought out so clearly in verse 6, “But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.” Christ is not a servant is this sense but is the Son who is over His own house…showing that He is God! Indeed, we who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ make up that house…we are His body, His house as we read in Ephesians 2:19-22, “Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.” (CC) (680.2)
