I am not a Jehovah’s Witness. I am a Christian. Is it wrong that I acknowledge God’s name is Jehovah?
We read in Jeremiah 16:21, “Therefore, behold, I will this once cause them to know, I will cause them to know my hand and my might; and they shall know that my name is Jehovah.” (DARBY). In the King James version of the Bible, every time you seen the word LORD (written in upper-case letters) it is Jehovah in the originals. The name is really YHWH, a word that has no vowels. It is often translated as ‘Yahweh’, adding vowels to make it pronounceable. The name ‘Jehovah’, however, is very commonly used, especially in the KJV. In almost every instance in the KJV, ‘Jehovah’ is given as ‘the LORD’, except in four different occasions: Exodus 6:3, Psalm 83:18, Isaiah 12:2, and Isaiah 26:4.
To acknowledge God’s name as being Jehovah is not wrong because that, indeed, is His name. ‘Jehovah’ is defined as the self-existent, eternal One. Of course, the Lord has many names besides Jehovah. A few names of God are:
ELOHIM (Creator) in Genesis 1:1.
EL SHADDAI (The Almighty God) in Genesis 17:1.
ADONAI (Master) in Genesis 15:2.
JEHOVAH-JIRAH (The Lord will provide) in Genesis 22:14.
JEHOVAH-SHALOM (The Lord is peace) in Judges 6:24.
I’ve listed just a few of the many names of God in the Bible. Every one of the many names of God describes a different aspect of His character and is important. The name ‘Jehovah’ (LORD) is given in Scripture as God’s holy covenant name, and this name is the most frequently used in the Bible (about 6,750 times).
In the JW’s Bible, THE NEW WORLD TRANSLATION, almost every instance of God’s name being used, in any form, is wrongly changed to Jehovah. This, among their many false beliefs, takes away the different characteristics of the Lord made known by His different identifying names. I’m so thankful that you are not a so-called Jehovah’s Witness and are a Christian. I say ‘so-called’ because they do not actually witness for Jehovah. They are a destructive cult who have successfully deceived many people over the years. I won’t go into their many, many false teachings here because that is not the intent of your question. I do suggest that you, and others, might spend a little time discovering the false teachings of the cult. I say ‘a little time’ because our time is much better spent on learning the truth rather than giving much of our time researching error.
Again, I see nothing wrong with using the name Jehovah where it is appropriate. However, I do caution you that some will mistake you for being a Jehovah’s Witness, so you should, “…sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.” (1 Peter 3:15).
