In Titus 2:11, it says that God’s grace has appeared to all men. Does this mean that everyone in the world has heard the Gospel?
Let me say from the outset that all men have witnessed God’s existence in His creation. We read in Romans 1:19-20, “Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse.” So, in God’s creation, the earth and heavens and all that is included, we see the reality of God’s power and His Godhead. So much so, that no one is without excuse in saying they had no idea that God exists. We can see Him every day in the nature He has created for us to learn from and enjoy. Believing in the existence of God is simply the beginning of understanding who God is, His love for us, and our need of Him for our salvation. We need faith in the Lord Jesus Christ to be saved.
Where does faith come from? “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (Romans 10:17). Through the Word of God (the Bible) we know that faith shows us the reality of God, His love for us, and the gift of salvation through the death, burial, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. Faith shows us that we are sinners in need of a savior…the Lord Jesus.
- Hebrews 11:3, “Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.”
- Romans 5:1, “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
It is by God’s grace through faith that anyone that desires to be saved can be saved and have eternal life. Ephesians 2:8-9 tells us, “For by GRACE are ye saved through FAITH; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” Grace is a gift that is not earned, but given from a loving God who desires all men to be saved. How does one become saved through faith? Simply by believing the Gospel message that Jesus Christ, God’s Son, died for you, a sinner. “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved…” (Acts 16:31). “This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners…” (1 Timothy 1:15).
You asked if everyone in the world has heard the Gospel, according to Titus 2:11. Let’s read that verse in the KJV, “For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men.” I love the KJV. It is the translation of choice for me because of its accuracy and its regal language. However, there are times when the KJV does not capture the exact meaning of a particular passage. This is one of those times. Let’s read this verse in the NASB, “For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all people.” Can you see the difference here? The grace of God that offers salvation to all men has appeared, or been revealed. God’s grace has been revealed in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ when He was born as a baby in Bethlehem, grew up and served the Lord perfectly every moment of His life. Not only did He always do His Father’s will, He LOVED to do His Father’s will. (Psalm 40:8). Indeed, the grace of God is for ALL MEN, for God’s desire is for ALL MEN to be saved as we read in 1 Timothy 2:4, “(God) Who will have ALL MEN TO BE SAVED, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.” Always doing His Father’s will we read that the Lord Jesus “became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” (Philippians 2:8). After being saved, we can say along with the Apostle Paul that, “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20).
Has every person in the world heard the Good News of salvation through faith in the Lord Jesus? I’m sure they haven’t. You and I, as believers on the Lord Jesus, have the privilege and responsibility to share the Gospel with the lost ones. We read in Romans 10:14-15, “How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!” My fellow believers, may we be in prayer, seeking God’s guidance in sharing the Gospel with the lost. Who are the ‘sent’ ones that should tell others to be saved? We are instructed to “do the work of an evangelist” in 2 Timothy 4:5. Remember, if you are saved…you are sent. (CC) (742.4)
