Can you explain to me the difference between God and Jesus?
That’s such a good and important question. Let’s begin by reading 1 Timothy 3:16 which says, “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.” GOD WAS MANIFEST IN THE FLESH. This means that God was made known to us by becoming flesh…or becoming a person on the earth. Let’s read John 1:1, and 14, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God….And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the ONLY BEGOTTEN of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”
Who is this “only begotten of the Father? It is the Lord Jesus as we read in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his ONLY BEGOTTEN Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” So, we see that JESUS IS GOD!
The Bible clearly states that there in only ONE GOD. “I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me…” (Isaiah 45:5). “…there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me.” (Isaiah 45:21). Yet, the Bible also clearly states that this ONE GOD exists as a plural entity. In the very first verse in the Bible, we learn of this plurality of the person of God. Genesis 1:1 says, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” The Hebrew word for God in this verse is ‘ĕlôhîym’ which is defined as “gods in the ordinary sense; but specifically used (in the plural thus, especially with the article) of the supreme God.” This clearly shows that our God exists in a plural form. We read in Genesis 1:26, “And God said, LET US make man in OUR IMAGE, after OUR LIKENESS…” At the building of the tower of Babel, we read the words of the Lord in Genesis 11:7, “Go to, LET US go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.”
We see that God exists in a plural form. We see from the scriptures that our God exists as a triune God, or a Trinity. What evidence is there that God exists in a triune form? Let’s consider just a few examples.
- John 14:16-17, “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.” Here, we have God the SON praying to God the FATHER to send God the SPIRIT.
- Matthew 3:16-17, “And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” Here, we have God the SON being baptized, God the SPIRIT alighting upon Him, and God the FATHER voicing His pleasure in His Son.
- Hebrews 9:14, “How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?” Here we have God the SON offering Himself through God the SPIRIT to God the FATHER for our sakes.
I just don’t think this could be any clearer. To be sure, it is God the Son who died for our sins. It is God the Father who accepted that offering as powerful enough to put away all sin. It is God the Spirit who teaches us, exalts the Son, and intercedes for us in our prayers.
I hope this is helpful to you in understanding who the Lord Jesus Christ is. One more good point is to consider creation. It is written in Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” It is said of the Lord Jesus in Colossians 1:16, “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him.” So, we emphatically declare that JESUS IS GOD!
