I will admit that I was not familiar with that word, but, after looking up its definition, I found I was very familiar with what it means.  According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, aseity is defined as: “the quality or state of being self-derived or self-originated, specifically: the absolute self-sufficiency, independence, and autonomy of God.”  The definition found on the Bible Hub website states: “Aseity refers to the self-existence and self-sufficiency of God. In simpler terms, it highlights that God’s being and existence come wholly from Himself and depend on no external source. The word “aseity” comes from Latin roots meaning “from oneself.” This concept underscores that God did not come into being at any point in time, and He is not sustained by anything outside of Himself.”

This is saying that God is self-existent.  No one created God.  He has ALWAYS existed.  I will be the first to admit that this is so hard to wrap my mind around.  Everything we can see had a beginning and will have an end.  To visualize God as having no beginning or end is a little hard…yet it is the truth.

The Lord told Moses to go to Pharoah with a message to let His people go.  We read in Exodus 3:13-14, “And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.”  What a remarkable statement the Lord made here to make known His name and His person.  “I AM THAT I AM.”  This name shows the real being of God and His self-existence.  It also expresses His eternal state and His immutability.  “I AM THAT I AM” includes all time…past, present, and future.  It even includes before time began.  The sense is, not only I am what I am at present, but I am what I have been, and I am what I shall be, and shall be what I am.

The Lord, in this portion, also refers to Himself as “I AM.”  This is also how the Lord Jesus referred to Himself in John 8:58 where we read, “Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I AM”, thus showing that the Lord Jesus is God.

We have the truth of God’s eternal state brought out clearly in several places in the scriptures.

  • Psalm 90:2, “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even FROM EVERLASTING TO EVERLASTING, THOU ART GOD.”
  • Isaiah 40:28, “Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that THE EVERLASTING GOD, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.”
  • 1 Timothy 1:17, “Now unto the KING ETERNAL, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.”
  • Revelation 1:8, “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.”

I think this is enough evidence to show us the truth of the eternal existence of God.  This may be a little hard to understand, but it is a wonderful truth that should cause us to wonder and be amazed at this powerful self-existent God who loves us so much that He sent His ONLY BEGOTTEN SON into this world to offer us the forgiveness of sins by dying for us on the cross.  God is eternal and unlimited…so is His love for us.  Do you know Him as your savior?  (CC)  (685.4)
