If God said beside Him there is no Savior, then who is Jesus claiming to be when He says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life”?
Let’s look at those two verses you are referring to. Isaiah 43:11 says, “I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour.” We read in John 14:6, “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” It is quite obvious that Jesus is claiming to be the one and only savior! Other scriptures affirm this truth.
- Luke 2:11, “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a SAVIOUR, which is Christ the Lord.”
- John 4:42, “And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the SAVIOUR of the world.”
- Philippians 3:20, “For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the SAVIOUR, the Lord Jesus Christ.”
To say that the Lord Jesus is the savior, when God declares that He is the only savior, evidences another great truth…JESUS IS GOD! It is imperative that we understand that and believe it. Jesus is the Son of God and He is God, the Son. This is a great mystery but is revealed to us clearly in the Bible. 1 Timothy 3:16 tells us, “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: GOD WAS MANIFEST IN THE FLESH, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.” To ‘manifest’ means to make known. God was made known to us by taking on flesh and blood. This is called the incarnation. That is revealed to us in John 1:1-2, 14, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God…And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” The Word, who is God and was with God, became flesh in the person of Jesus Christ.
Further evidence that Jesus is God is found in Matthew 1:23, “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.” Indeed, God “dwelt among us.” We could go on and on with different verses declaring that Jesus is God, but the most overwhelming evidence we have is found in Hebrews 1:5-8, “For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son? And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him. And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire. But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.” How convincing is that? Here, we see God the Father, calling His Son, God! “But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever…”
I trust this is clear to you and you can see on the authority of God’s Word that Jesus Christ is God. Did Jesus, Himself, ever claim to be God? Let’s read John 10:30-33 when the Lord Jesus stated, “I and my Father are one. Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him. Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me? The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.” When the Lord Jesus claimed equality with the Father, the Jews knew exactly what He meant…He was claiming to be God. They took up stones to kill Him for making such a claim. So, yes, the Lord Jesus claimed to be God. Oh, may we humbly bow our knee before Him and confess, even as the Apostle Thomas said to Him, “My Lord and my God.” (John 20:28) (CC) (682.2)
