In view of Isaiah 43:11, how can we call Jesus our savior?
Before we consider Isaiah 43:11, let’s look at a few verses from the New Testament.
- Luke 2:11, “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.”
- Philippians 3:20, “For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ.”
- 1 Timothy 2:3, “For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour.”
- 2 Timothy 1:10, “But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.”
- 1 John 4:14, “And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.”
- Jude 25, “To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.”
Some of these verses (and there are others) tell us that Jesus Christ is the savior. Some of these verses (and there are others) tell us that God is the savior. We must acknowledge the validity of every word in the Bible because, “ALL SCRIPTURE IS GIVEN BY INSPIRATION OF GOD, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16). We read in John 10:35 that, “…the scripture cannot be broken.” The authority of the Scripture is final; it cannot be set aside. Whatever the Bible says is true. There is no refuting it or objecting to it. Now, let’s read Isaiah 43:11 which says, “I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour.” So, if the Bible is inspired by God and it cannot be broken, how are we to understand that both God and Jesus are referred to as Savior?
The answer is quite simple…JESUS IS GOD! Let’s consider the Lord Jesus’ claim in John 10:30-33, “I and my Father are one. Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him. Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me? The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, MAKEST THYSELF GOD.” Here, we see the Lord Jesus openly confesses that HE IS GOD.
Now, let’s consider the words of God in Hebrews 1:8, “But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O GOD, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.” Here, we see God acknowledging that His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, is God. Could there possibly be a higher more authoritative recognition than that? GOD tells us that Jesus is GOD!
Genesis 1:1 says, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” No doubt, God created the heavens and earth. Colossians 1:16-18 says of the Lord Jesus, “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.” No doubt, the Lord Jesus created all things. We know this portion is speaking of the Lord Jesus, for He is the head of the body, the church. (Read Ephesians 5:23).
I trust this clears up this mystery for you and that you are able to see that Jesus is, indeed, God. For one more example, let’s read Isaiah 44:6, “Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I AM THE FIRST, AND I AM THE LAST; and beside me there is no God.” Now let’s compare that to the words of the Lord Jesus to the Apostle John in Revelation 1:17-18, “And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I AM THE FIRST AND THE LAST: I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.” Let me repeat it once more…Jesus is God and He is the savior!
