Is attending a home Bible study enough to satisfy the mandate in Hebrews to not forsake the assembling together?
The verse you are referring to is found in Hebrews 10:25, “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” We can see from this verse the Lord’s desire that His people gather together frequently. It is interesting and profitable to note that in the beginning, the church met in homes as we read in Acts 2:46, “And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from HOUSE TO HOUSE, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart.” We see several times where the church is mentioned as being in someone’s house. Romans 16:5 says, “Likewise greet THE CHURCH THAT IS IN THEIR HOUSE. Salute my wellbeloved Epaenetus, who is the firstfruits of Achaia unto Christ.” (See also 1 Corinthians 16:19, Colossians 4:15, Philemon 2). As most of us realize the church is comprised of every single person that has put his/her faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Acts 2:47 tells us, “And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.” (NKJV). Never is the church referred to as a building in the Bible!
We read of the main functions of the church in Acts 2:42 which states, “And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.”
- THE APOSTLES’ DOCTRINE speaks of the teachings of the Bible.
- FELLOWSHIP speaks of a time sharing in the wonderful truths of the Lord and His ways for us.
- BREAKING OF BREAD refers to that special time of worship when we are gathered together to remember the Lord and His death for us as He asked us to do. (1 Corinthians 11:23-26.)
- PRAYERS speak of that time when the believers come together to lift our united voices to the Lord in making our requests, praising the Lord, and thanking Him for His many blessings.
We also see the meetings of the local church were held on the first day of the week as we read in Acts 20:7, “And upon THE FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.” (See also 1 Corinthians 16:2).
There is absolutely nothing wrong in having the church meetings in our homes. The Lord has promised us in Matthew 18:20, “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” Wherever we are gathered together for teaching, fellowship, worship, and prayer, the Lord has promised His presence. However, if we decide to forego the regular meetings of the church, if we decide not to be together with those of “like precious faith, or if we simply find it more convenient to stay home and not trouble ourselves to be with others…then we have forsaken the assembling of ourselves together.
Throughout the country and the world, there are many believers who meet in their homes as representatives of the local church. The Lord is honored in that, and we should faithfully seek to be with those of whom we can properly fellowship with. But let us not be guilty of meeting in our homes as a way to avoid being with fellow believers with whom we should be with. (CC) (713.2)
