Is it necessary to believe in the virgin birth of Jesus to be saved?
The scriptures are very clear about the Lord Jesus being born of a virgin. We read prophetically of the birth of Jesus in Isaiah 7:14 which says, “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” We know this is speaking of the Lord Jesus because we read of the fulfillment of that prophesy in Matthew 1:19-23, “Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.”
We have the words of Mary, speaking of her virginity in Luke 1:30-35 which tells us, “And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I KNOW NOT A MAN? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.”
The virgin birth of the Lord Jesus speaks of His absolute purity, sinlessness, and deity, as well as His humanity. He was born of a woman, which speaks of His humanity. He was not born of a man, but of the Holy Spirit, which speaks of His eternal person and deity. If the Lord had simply been born of a man and a woman, He would not be God and, therefore, would not be an acceptable sacrifice for our sins. He would have had a sin nature, like the rest of us do. It is said of our blessed savior that He:
- KNEW NO SIN – 2 Corinthians 5:21
- DID NO SIN – 1 Peter 2:22
- IN HIM IS NO SIN – 1 John 3:5
This perfect character of the Lord Jesus is imperative to Him being our savior! However, is it necessary that we know and understand this in order to be saved? There is so much about the Lord that we can learn, and so much more about Him that we will only discover and understand in eternity. There are so many important doctrines to be learned that will draw us closer to Christ and will strengthen us to live for Him. I don’t believe we need to truly understand the virgin birth of the Lord and its implications in order to be saved. We simply need to realize that we are sinners in need of a savior, that the Lord Jesus is the Son of God who came into this world to give Himself as the perfect sacrifice to save us, that He did, indeed, die for us and was resurrected the third day for our justification. Of course, as you grow in the knowledge of the Lord, you will surely gladly accept and rejoice in His virgin birth.
I’ll leave you with this verse that shows the way of salvation clearly. Romans 10:9 tells us, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” I pray that you have put your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and have the assurance of your eternal salvation.
