Is sin categorized all the same or is there a hierarchy (one worse than the other)?
All sin is bad and will disqualify us from being able to be in the presence of God. The Bible is clear in telling us that, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23). Because we All sin, we ALL stand guilty before the Lord. Romans 3:19 tells us, “Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and ALL THE world MAY BECOME GUILTY BEFORE GOD.” So…all sin is bad and will keep up from entering Heaven.
What then, is the solution? If ALL have sinned, and ALL are guilty before God, how can we possibly get to Heaven? For sure, we cannot get to Heaven because of our own works that we might try to do to appease God for our sins. We read in Ephesians 2:8-9, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” We cannot labor to put away our own sins. In fact, the Lord detests our own efforts to save ourselves. Isaiah 64:6 makes it clear, “But we are all as an unclean thing, and ALL OUR RIGHTEOUSNESSES ARE AS FILTHY RAGS; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.” My friend, if you are struggling to labor so that you can get into Heaven, please just give up. You cannot do it.
We can get to Heaven by putting our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. Christ died on the cross to pay our sin debt. He suffered at the hands of a sin hating God so that we might be forgiven and become saved. The Apostle Paul said in 1 Timothy 1:15, “This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.” Yes, the Lord Jesus came to the earth to save those who have sinned. Consider these precious words from Romans 5:6-8, “For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, CHRIST DIED FOR US.”
You asked if any sins are worse than others. While any sin will disqualify us from going to Heaven, there does seem to be some sins that are greatly reprehensible to the Lord…and merit special punishment.
- Those who would entice children to sin. Matthew 18:6, “But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.”
- Any who would betray the Lord as Judas did. Mark 14:21, “The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born.”
- Greater sin is attributed to those who have witnessed the truth of the love and mercy of God, and yet rejected it. Matthew 11:23-24, “And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.”
- Those with greater knowledge of the plan of salvation, but refused it, shall suffer greater condemnation. Luke 12:47-48, “And that servant, which knew his lord’s will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.”
So, yes, with these few examples, we see there are differences in some sins, however any sin will keep us from Heaven. Dear reader, do you have the forgiveness of sins that comes from knowing Jesus Christ as your savior? If not, I urge you to put your faith in Him today. (CC) (684.2)
