Actually, nine of the Ten Commandments from the Old Testament are repeated in the New Testament in one way or another.  Let’s take a look at them.

  • Exodus 20:3, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”
    • 1 Timothy 2:5, “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”
  • Exodus 20:4, “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.”
    • 1 John 5:21, “Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.”
  • Exodus 20:7, “Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.”
    • 1 Timothy 6:1, “Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed.”
  • Exodus 20:8, “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.”
  • Exodus 20:12, “Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.”
    • Ephesians 6:2, “Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)”
  • Exodus 20:13, “Thou shalt not kill.”
    • 1 Peter 4:15, “But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men’s matters.”
  • Exodus 20:14, “Thou shalt not commit adultery.”
    • 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.”
  • Exodus 20:15, “Thou shalt not steal.”
    • Ephesians 4:28, “Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.”
  • Exodus 20:16, “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.”
    • Revelation 21:8, “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
  • Exodus 20:17, “Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.”
    • Colossians 3:5-6, “Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience.”

The only Commandment not repeated in the New Testament is the fourth one, “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.” (Exodus 20:8).  It’s important to note that while the Lord Jesus was dwelling in the flesh on the earth, the people were still under the Mosaic Law.  We read of the Lord Jesus in Galatians 4:4, “But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law.”  Christ fulfilled all the requirements of the Law as we read in Matthew 5:17, “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.” With the law being fulfilled in Christ, “…ye are not under the law, but under grace.” (Romans 6:14).  “But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.” (Galatians 5:18).  We do not obey God’s moral law (the Ten Commandments) because we are under the Law, we practice them because we are taught to do so in the New Testament.  In this Day of Grace, in which we live, we do not observe the Sabbath because that was part of the Law.  We acknowledge the Lord’s Day, which is the first day of the week.  A couple of examples are Acts 20:7, “And upon THE FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.”  1 Corinthians 16:1-2 says, “Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye. Upon THE FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him…”  So, God’s moral law is good and should be followed as taught in the New Testament.  (CC)  (666.4)
