I am so sorry for the loss of your dear father.  Ever for believers, the loss of a loved one can be hard.  I pray you are looking to the Lord to give you that peace “which passeth all understanding.” (Philippians 4:7). You said your father “went home to be with the Lord.”  This is what happens to believers when they leave this scene, so I assume your father was a believer on the Lord Jesus Christ.  We read in 2 Corinthians 5:8, “We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.”  The Apostle Paul wrote in Philippians 1:23-24, “For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you.”  From this we learn that when a believer dies, he is “absent from the body,” he “departs” from this life and is immediately in the presence of the Lord…which is FAR BETTER.

As I’m sure you understand that while the body of your father remains on the earth for now, his soul and spirit are with the Lord.  He is now in a disembodied condition, which is temporary, for when the Lord comes to rapture His church, your dad (and all believers who have died) will be reunited with his resurrected body as we read in 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17, “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”

You asked if your dad could see you from Heaven.  I’m afraid I cannot give you a definitive answer to this good question.  The Bible is silent on this matter.  We do know that when someone comes to faith in the Lord Jesus, all Heaven is aware and rejoices as we read in Luke 15:10, “Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.”  Of course, those dear departed ones who are presently in the presence of the Lord are experiencing the greatest joy.  “Thou wilt shew me the path of life: IN THY PRESENCE IS FULNESS OF JOY; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.” (Psalm 16:11).  With the dear departed saints being in the presence of the Lord, I suspect all their attention is upon the One who loved them and gave Himself for them. (Read Galatians 2:20).

Will you see your father when your time comes to leave this world?  Dear friend, let me first state the obvious, so that no one here will be confused.  If you have trusted the Lord Jesus Christ as your savior, you will also go to Heaven when you pass from this scene.  We read of a redeemed man named Lazarus at the instance of his death. “And it came to pass, that the beggar (Lazarus) died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom…” (Luke 16:22).  A precious thought to realize we will have this heavenly escort into the presence of our dear savior.  If you are saved, you will indeed see your father again in Heaven.  I think of the words of David after his young son passed away.  2 Samuel 12:23 gives us the words of David, “But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I SHALL GO TO HIM, but he shall not return to me.”  David was confident that his son was with the Lord and that when he died, he would also go to be with the Lord, where his son was.

Will we recognize our loved ones in Heaven?  It certainly seems we will.  Let’s consider Matthew 17:1-3, “And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him.”  It seems obvious that when Moses and Elijah were present at the Lord’s transfiguration, the disciples there knew who they were.  I pray these remarks might be used of the Lord to give you peace as you grieve the passing of your dad.  May the Lord give all believers the confidence and peace each one needs to deal with the passing of a loved one.  (CC)  (676.6)
