This could just be a coincidence, but I don’t really believe in coincidences.  Years ago, I was actively running from the Lord and His will.  Over and over again, He sent people into my path that spoke to me of God’s love and grace.  I finally realized the Lord was trying to get my attention and I bowed my knee to Him and sought to follow Him.  That was many years ago, and I am so thankful for His persistence in seeking me.  It could very well be that the Lord is trying to get your attention and have you consider this most important verse.

Let’s read that verse.  John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”  What an amazing verse.  Its truth is so clear and sweet to the ear.  Notice that in the KJV, this verse has 25 words.

FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD, THAT HE GAVE HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN…  The first half of this verse speaks plainly of the precious love of God.  He loves the entire world…everyone!  He loves the world so much that He gave the world a gift…His very own prized possession.

SON…This is the middle word in this verse.  God so loved the world He gave His only begotten Son…His prized possession.  It is said of the Lord Jesus and His Father, “Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I WAS DAILY HIS DELIGHT, rejoicing always before him.” (Proverbs 8:30).  The love God has for His Son just cannot be measured, yet HE GAVE His Son for us.  We learn in 1 John 4:14, “And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.”

  • Christ came into the world to save sinners (1 Timothy 1:15).
  • He came to seek and to save that which was lost (Luke 19:10).
  • He invites all those under the burden of sin to come to Him. (Matthew 11:28).
  • He will save all those who come to Him in faith. (John 6:37).

THAT WHOSOEVER BELIEVETH IN HIM SHOULD NOT PERISH BUT HAVE EVERLASTING LIFE…The second half of this verse shows the wonderful result of believing on the Lord Jesus Christ.  Those who believe on Him have everlasting life.  They will never perish!  John 10:28 assures us, “And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.”  Such safety and security we have when we realize we are sinners, repent of our sins, and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as our savior.

So, we see this verse has two sides.  The loving and giving are God’s side.  The believing and having are our side.  God’s Son is right in the middle.  He is the conduit between God’s love and man’s blessings.  It is through Him that we experience the benefit of God’s love.  One has written about this verse:

The greatest kindness ever known.

The greatest offering to atone.

The greatest welcome ever known.

The greatest blessing for your own.

In your question, you did not state if you are a believer on the Lord Jesus Christ.  If not, perhaps the Lord is keeping this verse in front of you so that you might think about His love for you, your need of a savior, and His provision of His own Son to save you and give you eternal life.  If you are a believer, perhaps the Lord is keeping this verse before you to constantly remind you of this greatest blessing that you have because of the greatest gift that He gave.  May the Lord impress this verse upon your heart so that it might have the needed impact on your life.  (CC)  (683.2)
