Was man created to worship God?
Well, my good friend, in a way, I would say yes. Certainly, I believe that worship is our reasonable service to God (Romans 12:1; Revelation 4:11). We who love the Lord are to worship the Lord in spirit and in truth (John 4:24); and so much the more given the demonstration of God’s love for us in sending His only begotten Son, the Lord Jesus Christ into the world to be the propitiation for our sins, in other words our sin offering (1 John 4:10; 2 Corinthians 5:21). But personally, I believe that God created man as an expression of His perfect love, and that His desire for man from the beginning was that man might know and love God and have fellowship with Him forever. We read in Genesis 1:26-27 that God created man in His own image unlike all His other creatures. We have been given a soul and spirit and thus the ability to love and obey God by our own choice. Now, I believe that God is perfect and complete in Himself, and therefore He did not create a race of robots who could do nothing but love and praise God. Love and obedience must come from our hearts, otherwise we would not truly love God. In short, I believe that man was created out of God’s perfect love so that we might come to know and love God and walk in fellowship with Him.
So, let’s look at some Scriptures related to God’s purposes in creating mankind. First, we see that God created man according to His perfect will and for His own purpose. In Colossians 1:16 we read, “…All things were created through Him and for Him.” Furthermore, God has assigned to man a unique role on the earth with the responsibility to be obedient to Him in all things (Genesis 1:26-27; 2:17). But when man chose his own will over God’s will in Genesis 3:1-8, fellowship with God was broken. Adam and Eve knew that they had done wrong and they hid from God (Genesis 3:9). The curse of sin came upon man and upon the earth at that time, and this brought about sickness and death and all the other horrors of sin (Genesis 3:16-19). But even at that unhappy time, God had a plan to redeem His children (Genesis 3:15) so that His original design of man being able to have a personal relationship with God might yet be realized. The only way that man could be put right with God was through God’s perfect love which saw us in our need and sent us the Savior, Christ Jesus to redeem us. Through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, our sins are taken away, and fellowship with God is restored. More than that, we who believe are born again through the Holy Spirit and we are made fit for a heavenly presence forever with God. Thus, I say that we were created by God’s perfect love in order that we might love God and to be with Him forever.
In summary, we know God as perfectly holy and righteous, but He is also perfect love (1 John 4:8-10). I believe that love moved God to create us, and it was perfect love that caused Him to send the Lord Jesus to redeem us. His love is at the root of all His dealings with us, and such love that reaches out to us and draws us to Himself should bring us to praise Him. His great purpose is to have us to love Him and to truly desire fellowship with Him, and through His unique Son He has made eternal life with Him in His very presence a reality for those whom He has redeemed. To such amazing love, our hearts should readily worship Him now, and we who believe will be privileged to do so throughout all eternity! We sing, “He justly claims a song from Thee, His lovingkindness oh how free.” (SF) (704.2)
