The Bible says, “Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind taking every thought captive.” This seems like it would drive one crazy. How do I do this? Is it mind control?
You are blending TWO Bible verses. Though they are related, we need to look at them separately to answer your questions. The first verse is Romans 12:2 which reads, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that GOOD and ACCEPTABLE and PERFECT will of God.” If you are a believer in Christ, the last thing you should want is to be “conformed to this world.” The “world” speaks of the “world system without God which is under the influence of Satan, the ‘god of this world.’” We learn in Ephesians 2:2-3 that before we were saved we “walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of the flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature the children of wrath, just as others.” If you want to talk about “mind control,” this passage speaks about how Satan, the prince of this world (John 12:31), used this world system (its entertainment, its politics, its fashions, and even its religion) to “squeeze us into its mold.” Satan has had 6,000 years of experience knowing how to use the “things of the world” to attract our “flesh” (our fallen, sinful nature…see Romans 7:18-20) and thus we are told in 1 John 2:15-16, “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but of the world. We were under constant “peer pressure” to conform to these things so our peers wouldn’t look down on us.
Because believers are no longer “of the world” (see John 17:13-16), the Apostle Paul goes on to exhort us to be “transformed by the renewing of the mind.” How doe this happen and what does it mean for us? This simply means that God wants us to “think like He does!” The world tries to make us “think like them,” but God wants to give us “His mind” so we can be truly happy. As we read the Bible and learn what God thinks about things, we are (unconsciously) “being made more like Jesus.” We see this in 2 Corinthians 3:18, “But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being TRANSFORMED INTO THE SAME IMAGE from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.” When we study our Bibles, the Holy Spirit will “renew our minds” by showing us the “glory of the Lord” (the excellencies of our blessed Lord Jesus) and we will then take on His image. The result of this is what we saw in Romans 12:2; we will “prove what is that GOOD and ACCEPTABLE and PERFECT will of God.” This does not sound like “mind control” to me. This sounds like I will experience God’s PERFECT WILL for me which will be “GOOD for me” and “ACCEPTABLE (pleasing) to God.”
Now let’s read 2 Corinthians 10:3-5, “For though we walk in the flesh (human bodies), we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but might in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, BRINGING EVERY THOUGHT INTO CAPTIVITY TO THE OBEDIENCE OF CHRIST.” We learn here that the believer is in a war, not against people with flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces (Satan and his demons…see Ephesians 6:10-13) who will try to BRING US DOWN by false teachings that are contrary to “the knowledge of God.” Teachings such as evolution, human philosophies and reasonings, and religions that deny the truth of God revealed through Jesus Christ will rob us of our peace and joy that we have in Christ. So, we must use God’s Word “for pulling down the strongholds of Satan and all his arguments and so-call wisdom” that he would use to once again “conform us to the world.” That Word which will defeat him will “bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,” which simply means “our thoughts are conformed to Christ’s thoughts.” As we saw in Romans 12:2, our minds are renewed and by learning God’s thoughts we are happy in His GOOD, ACCEPTABLE and PERFECT will. This is NOT “mind control (as if we were passive and being controlled apart from our wills); we are willingly desiring to “think like God” because we have “the mind of Christ” (see 1 Corinthians 2:16).
