Let me begin by saying the “Book of Enoch” was not included in the Canon of Scripture and thus the Lord could not have been referring to the Book of Enoch. I would encourage you to go to our website (www.answersfromthebook.net) and type in our Seach Box the words, “The Book of Enoch.” You will see several questions about this and why it could not be included in the holy Scriptures.

To answer your question, we will now read Matthew 22:29-30, “Jesus answered and said to them, ‘You are mistaken, NOT KNOWING THE SCRIPTURES nor the power of God. For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like the angels of God in heaven.’” The Lord was speaking to a group of Sadducees who were one of the two religious sects among the Jews (the other being the Pharisees). They were a very liberal sect that DENIED THE RESURRECTION OF THE BODY. They came to Jesus with a question designed to prove that there was NO RESURRECTION. Let’s read verses 23-28, “The same day the Sadducees, WHO SAY THERE IS NO RESURRECTION, came to Him and asked Him, saying, ‘Teacher, Moses said if a man dies, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up offspring for his brother. Now there were with us seven brothers. The first died after he has married, and having no offspring, left his wife to his brother. Likewise the second also, and the third, even to the seventh. Last of all the woman died also. Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her?’” In this hypothetical scenario, they believed this was proof-positive that there was no such thing as the “resurrection of the body.”

The Lord’s response was two-fold: You don’t

1) Know the Scriptures, or

2) Know the power of God.

First of all, they did NOT KNOW their Bible, for the Scriptures that Moses wrote only dealt with “marriage in this life” (see Genesis 38:8 and Deuteronomy 25:5) and he never wrote anything about “marriage in the afterlife.” The Lord went on to say in verse 30, there is NO MARRIAGE IN HEAVEN.”  Later, other inspired writers of the Scriptures brought out the great change there will be in the afterlife in heaven, teaching us that when the resurrection of believers takes place, they will receive new, glorified bodies “fit for heaven,” not for earth, and in those bodies, there will be no need for marriage or procreation (see 1 Corinthians 15:35-49). We won’t be ANGELS, but we will be like the angels for we will have immortal bodies that are “spiritual in nature” and thus there will be no desire or capability for sexual relationships.

Their ignorance of the SCRIPTURES and the POWER of God was then revealed to them in verses 31-32 where Jesus said, “But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? God is NOT THE GOD OF THE DEAD, BUT OF THE LIVING.” He was quoting the words of Moses from Exodus 3:6 to disprove their error that there was no resurrection. They believed when a man died, he ceased to exit. But Exodus 3:6 proves this to be false, for God is NOT “the God of nonexistent persons,” but “the God of the living.” Abraham, Issac and Jacob had been dead for centuries, yet they were STILL ALIVE as “disembodied spirits” and one day “their bodies will be resurrected” (as I alluded to above).

As you can see, the Lord referred to the words of Moses to refute their errors. Thus, I purposely avoided referring to your reference in the Book of Enoch which, as I stated at the beginning, is NOT part of the Canon of Scripture.
