Let’s begin answering your good question by reading Hebrews 9:11-14, “But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”

A central theme in the book of Hebrews is that Christ is ‘better’ than all that is found in the Old Testament economy.  In this portion, we see that Christ is better than all the Old Testament sacrifices that had been offered.  The blood of bulls and goats could never remove anyone’s sins as we read in Hebrews 10:4, “For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.”  For all the millions of sacrifices that were made, that could not remove one sin.  However, the sacrifice of Christ, once for all, is able to remove millions of sins.

So, in the Old Testament, the high priest entered yearly into the holy place with the blood of a bull, within the vail on the Day of Atonement (read Leviticus 16:14).  Christ entered into that “tabernacle, not made with hands”, not with the blood of animals, but with His own precious blood…the One perfect sacrifice that could remove all sins.

“By His own blood.”  That is to say, by His own blood shed for the remission of sins. The meaning is, that it was in virtue of Christ’s own blood, that He obtained the pardon of all that believe on Him.  We read in 1 Peter 1:18-19, “Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.” That blood was not shed for Himself, for He had no sin, as we read in 1 Peter 2:22, “Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth.” So there was a material difference between His offering and that of the High Priest.  The offering which Christ made was completely for others.  That of the High Priest was for himself as well as for others.

May we all rejoice, realizing that the blood the Lord Jesus shed for us is able to give us “eternal redemption.”  My friend, have you put your faith in the finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ as the only payment for your sin debt?  Or are you, “…without Christ…having no hope, and without God in the world. (Ephesians 2:12)?  The Lord Jesus gave Himself so that you might not have to suffer eternal judgment for your sins.  Have you been reconciled to God through faith in the Lord Jesus?  2 Corinthians 5:18-19 tells us, “And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.”  This salvation can be yours if you simply “believe on the Lord Jesus Christ” (Acts 16:31).  (CC)  (640.2)
