That is a very good question because it addresses the very person of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the truth that HE IS GOD.  There are a couple of verses that could be understood as saying that Christ was part of God’s creation.  I trust that as we look carefully at these verses, we will get a good understanding of what is really being taught about the Lord Jesus.

  • Colossians 1:15, “Who (Christ) is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature.”
  • Revelation 3:14, “And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God.”

In Colossians 1:15, we see that Christ is “the firstborn of every creature.”  This could not mean that Christ was created by God.  Verse 16 shows us that Christ, Himself, is the creator of all things.  That reads, “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him.”  We also read in John 1:3 that, “All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.”

In scripture, the ‘firstborn’ can indicate the superiority or highest rank of someone.  Speaking of David, we read in Psalm 89:27, “Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth.”  Of course, at this time, David had already been born and was an adult, yet God declared that He would “make him my firstborn” and he would be “higher than the kings of the earth.”  So, because Christ is the One with the highest authority and superior over ALL God’s creation, we see that “…he might have the preeminence.” (Colossians 1:18).

In Revelation 3:14, we read the Lord Jesus is “the beginning of the creation of God.”  This phrase is sometimes confused as saying the Lord Jesus is the start of God’s creation.  If we read this phrase in the NASB, it says Christ is “the Origin of the creation of God.”  As God, all creation was originated or begun by Him.  So, Christ is not the One whom God created first, but He is the Beginner of all creation.  He created all things as we just read in Colossians 1:16.

We read in Hebrews 1:1-2 that, “God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, BY WHOM ALSO HE MADE THE WORLDS.”  Christ is not part of God’s creation, He is the instrument of God’s creation.

We read in 1 Corinthians 8:6, “But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, BY WHOM ARE ALL THINGS, and we by him.”  I trust these verses make it crystal that Christ is the Creator and not a created one.  He is God.  He is Creator.  He is eternal.  (CC)  (736.4)
