How can we speak to those who don’t believe in the inspiration of the scriptures?
Even though there are many who do not believe that God inspired the writing of the scriptures, that does not change the fact that the Bible is divinely inspired and can work in the hearts of men. The Apostle Paul wrote in Romans 1:16, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is THE POWER OF GOD UNTO SALVATION to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” God’s Word is powerful, and the Holy Spirit works in the hearts of sinners to convince them of their sinfulness and responsibility to God. The Lord Jesus said in John 16:8, “And when He (the Holy Spirit) has come, HE WILL CONVICT THE WORLD OF SIN, and of righteousness, and of judgment.” (NKJV).
The Holy Spirit works through the Word of God to convict and convince people that they are sinners deserving of an eternity in Hell and to show the righteousness of the Lord. There is a twofold aspect to the work of the Spirit. He will convict sinners of their sins, and He will lead believers into the truths given in God’s Word. The Lord Jesus said in John 16:13, “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.” We also read in Ephesians 6:17, “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” Clearly it is the Word of God that the Spirit uses to reach people for Christ.
Even though one may not believe in the inspiration of the Bible, the Spirit is able to work in his heart and convince him otherwise. It may not happen immediately, but by sharing God’s Word, the Spirit can take that and begin a work in his heart. So, if someone does not believe that God inspired His Word, give them the Word anyway. As we saw previously, the Word of God is POWERFUL. It is not up to us to convince someone of the truth, that is the work of the Holy Spirit. Our job is to give them the truth and allow the Lord to work through His Word. We read in 2 Corinthians 10:4-5, “(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.” It is only the Lord Who can overcome the objections and unbelief of those without Christ. When we share the Word of God, He can take the hardest heart and the spirit of rejection and use His Word to convict men of their sins and convince them of the authority of His Word. (CC) (637.6)
