I believe by keeping only the Bible in my heart I can be saved without knowing any other books written by men, whether they be pastors or philosophers or theologians. Please correct me if I am wrong.
We read in 1 Peter 1:23, “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, BY THE WORD OF GOD, which liveth and abideth for ever.” We are saved or born again by the Word of God. No other book can save us from the wrath of God that is coming on this world.
God’s Word tells us the truth about our condition. We read in Romans 3:23, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” What was God’s remedy for sin? We read in Romans 5:8, “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Does Christ’s death do us any good? We read in Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
How do we get eternal life? We read in John 3:16-17, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved.” The Lord Jesus said in Luke 13:3, “I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.” We also read in Romans 10:9-10, “that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation” (NASB). Our responsibility is “repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ” (Acts 20:21).
You wrote above that “by keeping only the Bible in my heart I can be saved.” If you mean by those words that you believe the truth of the Bible, including the verses quoted above, then you are absolutely correct. We do not need any other books in order to be saved FROM hell and saved FOR heaven. However, the Lord can use books written by godly people to help us understand the Bible better. Everything that we read should be compared to the inspired Word of God. As we read in 1 Thessalonians 5:21, “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” It is important to be careful about what we read since even the most godly saints sometimes write things that are wrong when compared to the Bible.
May we all cherish our Bibles, let the Holy Spirit teach us, and compare anything else that we read to God’s precious Word. (DJ) (601.2)
