I want to have an understanding of God the Father. What are His distinct attributes?
I would like to quote Matthew 11:27 before we begin. Jesus said, “All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, NOR DOES ANYONE KNOW THE FATHER EXCEPT THE SON, and the one to whom the SON wills to reveal Him.”
In these words, we learn that man, who is a “finite being,” can never fully know (understand) the Persons of the Godhead (the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit…see Mathew 28:19). Yet God the Son does reveal God the Father to men. John 1:18 says, “No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.” Mere human beings could never know God completely, for our “finite minds” are not able to grasp the greatness of God the Father (or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit), yet the Son of God was here on earth to reveal His Father to men. He could do this because He has the same NATURE of God the Father. Hebrews 1:1-3 speaks to this truth: “God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in times past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds, WHO BEING THE BRIGHTNESS OF HIS GLORY; AND THE EXPRESS IMAGE OF HIS PERSON, and upholding all things by the word of His power…” Because the Son has the same nature as the Father, He could say, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father” (John 14:9). Earlier, in John 10:30, Jesus said, “I and My Father are one.” They are indeed “ONE in nature”. When people observed Christ’s character (of LOVE and HOLINESS) they were learning the character of God the Father. I would encourage you to read the Gospels slowly and carefully to observe Christ’s actions which reveal His boundless LOVE for mankind and His absolute hatred of sin because of His HOLINESS. In these observations you will be learning of God the Father!
Perhaps you may be wondering: But why are the three Persons in the Godhead called the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit? We must be extremely careful in trying to understand these names with our own logic and human reasoning. I say this because when we think of “a father and a son” on earth we know that the father was born first and then he had a son, and thus the father is superior to his son. But God the Father and God the Son (and God the Spirit) are eternal (see Psalm 90:2; Micah 5:2; Hebrews 9:14). They had no beginning, so God the Father did not create the Son, and He is not superior to the Son. Some have tried to teach otherwise because Jesus is called “the ONLY BEGOTTEN SON of the Father” in John 1:14, but the words “only begotten” are one word in the Greek and they mean “only unique” Son. As stated before, the Father and the Son are ONE in nature so they are EQUAL and should be held in reverence EQUALLY. This is why Jesus could say, “that all men should HONOR the Son just as they honor the Father” (John 5:23).
Now I would like to show God the Father’s ATTRIBUTES from Scripture, and I will include verses that show these attributes belong also to the Son and the Holy Spirit. Each Person of the holy Trinity is:
OMNIPOTENT (all-powerful) —Genesis 18:14; Hebrews 1:3; Luke 1:35.
OMNISCIENT (all-knowing) —1 John 3;20; John 16:30; 1 Corinthains 2:10-11.
OMNIPRESENT (present everywhere) —Jeremiah 23:23-24; Matt. 28:20; Ps. 139:7
In closing, I would like to show from Scripture the DIFFERENT ROLES that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit have taken in bringing redemption to mankind. Here are the words of E. C. Hadley: “In the working out of the divine counsels we see that God, the Father, is looked upon as the AUTHOR and SOURCE of all things, the One who chooses, predestinates, calls and justifies and works all things after the counsel of His own will (See 1 Corinthians 8:6; Ephesians 1:3-11; 2 Timothy 1:9; Romans 8:28-33). The Son is looked upon as the WORKMAN or ARTIFICER by whom all things are made and upheld, the One in, and by and through whom all the counsels of the Triune God are realized and made secure and the work of redemption is accomplished, and the One who, in coming in the flesh, manifests and reveals God to man (See 1 Corinthians 8:6; Ephesians 1:2; 2 Timothy 1:9; John 1:18; 1 Timothy 1:16; Philippians 3:21). The Spirit of God is looked upon as the One who WORKS IN POWER IN THE CREATURE (See Judges 14:5-6; Ephesians 3:16; Romans 8:1-16, 26).” And I will add 1 Corinthians 2:9-13. (DO) (707.1)
