If I do not speak with new tongues, does that mean I do not have the Holy Spirit?
There are several verses of scripture in 1st Corinthians chapter 12 that will answer your question. Let’s read verse 13, “For by one Spirit WE WERE ALL baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and HAVE ALL been made to drink into one Spirit” (NKJV). Now let’s read verses 28-33, “And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healing, helps, administrations, VARIETIES OF TONGUES. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? Do all have the gifts of healings? DO ALL SPEAK WITH TONGUES? Do all interpret? But earnestly desire the best gifts.”
In verse 13 we see that ALL of the saints at Corinth were baptized by the Spirit into the body of Christ. In verses 28-33 the apostle Paul lists various gifts that are given to the members of the body of Christ, including “varieties of tongues.” Yet he goes on to ask a series of questions regarding these gifts and they all demand a “No” answer. The main point Paul is making is this; we ALL HAVE A GIFT, but we DON’T ALL HAVE THE SAME GIFT, including “speaking in tongues.” This answers your question clearly and emphatically, every believer has received the “baptism of the Spirit” (which placed them in the Body of Christ), but not all believers speak with tongues.
Satan has been successful in creating confusion and doubt (over one’s salvation) on this question of “speaking in tongues.” But as we just saw, you need not speak in tongues to have received the Spirit, and Scripture is equally clear that one receives the Spirit the MOMENT THEY TRUST IN CHRIST. Ephesians 1:13 confirms this: “In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, HAVING BELIEVED, YOU WERE SEALED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT OF PROMISE.” The fact is, if one has not received the Holy Spirit, they are not saved. We see this truth in Romans 8:9, “But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.” (283.5) (DO)
