In the parable of the wise and foolish virgins they all slept awaiting the bridegroom. So, my question is what is the difference between sleeping and not having oil? It would seem logical to think spiritual sleeping would equate to less oil. Any thoughts please?
We will be reading verses from Matthew 25:1-13, beginning with verses 1-4. “Then the kingdom of heaven shall be likened to ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Now five of them were WISE, and five of them were FOOLISH. Those who were FOOLISH took their lamps and TOOK NO OIL with them, but the WISE TOOK OIL in their vessels with their lamps.” The “Kingdom of heaven” speaks of “all who profess to believe in Christ” whether they be true or false. In this parable the WISE are believers. How do we know that? Ah, because they “took OIL in their vessels.” The “oil” speaks of the Holy Spirit who indwells every believer (John 14:16-17; Acts 1:8; Ephesians 1:13 and 1 John 2;20 & 27). The FOOLISH are unbelievers who “took NO OIL,” and thus they do not have the Holy Spirit indwelling them. We see this solemn truth in Romans 8:9, “But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, HE IS NOT HIS.” This also means they are not ready when the Lord comes and will be left behind with the door of salvation closed to them (read verses 8-13). We read that they “went out to meet the bridegroom” along with the wise virgins, which means they had a profession of faith in Christ and even professed to be waiting for Christ to return, but mere professors will have to hear those solemn words from the Lord, “Assuredly, I say to you, I DO NOT KNOW YOU” (verse 12).
Now let’s read verses 5-6, “But while the bridegroom was delayed, THEY ALL SLUMBERED AND SLEPT. And at midnight a cry was heard: ‘Behold, the bridegroom is coming; go out to meet him!’” If we were to study “church history,” we would see that for many centuries ALL (believers and unbelievers) “lost sight of the truth of the Lord’s coming.” We had read, “while the bridegroom was delayed, they all slumbered and slept,” which means that even believers grew impatient and during that time it may have been hard to distinguish between “true believers” and “mere professors.” The Apostle Paul had to warn believers of not falling into a “spiritual sleep” where their LIGHT (testimony) would be snuffed out for a time as they became “like the unbelievers in the world.” We see this teaching in Ephesians 5:11 & 14, “And do not have fellowship with the unfruitful works of DARKNESS, but rather also reprove them…Wherefore he says, WAKE UP, THOU THAT SLEEPEST, AND ARISE FROM AMONG THE DEAD, and the Christ shall shine upon thee” (DARBY Version). Thankfully believers did “wake up” when the truth of the Lord’s coming for them was proclaimed again. This happened in the 19th century, and a great revival took place. This is pictured in verse 6, “Behold, the bridegroom is coming; go out to meet him!” Once that truth took root in the hearts of believers, they were “awakened out of their sleep” and the truth of the Rapture has been boldly preached and the lives of those who hold this truth are purified by it. See 1 John 3:1-3.
Now to answer your specific question. No, the Holy Spirit remains in the believer even if they do “fall asleep spiritually” at times. He can be GRIEVED when this happens, but He remains in us (Ephesians 4:30). We do not have “less of the Spirit” when this happens, but “the Spirit has less of us!” What do I mean by that? After Paul exhorted believers to WAKE UP, he went on in verse 18 to say, “And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT.” That might seem to suggest that we can “have less of the Spirit” but what it is really teaching us is that we need to “submit to the Person of the Holy Spirit so He can CONTROL US.” If we drink too much wine, it will control us. If we yield ourselves to the indwelling Holy Spirit, He will control us. This, in turn, will lead us to being a “LIGHT in this world of darkness” for the glory of God and for the blessing of souls.
