I so much agree with you that neither candidate for president of the United States seems to be a true believer.  I have heard both Democrats and Republicans use the Bible in some of their speeches, but it did not seem to be a sincere attempt to properly follow the Word of God.  Both parties have different platforms that they stand for, but both include some form of abortion, some acceptance of gay and transexual rights, etc.  I think we can safely say that these candidates are not believers with the Lord’s honor and obedience as their guiding principles.

What can we do then?  Who should you vote for?  Should you vote for the lesser of the two evils?  Should you not vote for either of them?  These are hard decisions, but I see from the scriptures that the Lord will put into office the one he wants to be in office so that He might fulfill His purposes through them.

Consider what we read in Daniel 4:17, “This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and GIVETH IT TO WHOMSOEVER HE WILL, and SETTETH UP OVER IT THE BASEST OF MEN.”  From this we learn that the Lord establishes kingdoms, and He sometimes puts the vilest people in charge of the different kingdoms.  Why would he do that?  Because that is what we, as different nations, deserve.  Men have rejected the Lord, they have fought against His holy principles, they have despised His ways.  What do we, as a nation, deserve?  Yet, the Lord will put in various offices whom He will to accomplish His divine purposes.

So, much more important than who we should vote for…we as Christians should pray for our political leaders.  We read in Proverbs 21:1, “The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.”  No matter who the political leader is, the Lord holds his heart in His very hands and is able to move it according to His will.  For those in office, we should pray for open hearts to hear and follow the Lord’s leadership.  “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; FOR KINGS, AND FOR ALL THAT ARE IN AUTHORITY; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.” (1 Timothy 2:1-4).

One good example we have of the Lord giving kingdoms to the vilest of men is Pilate, whom the Lord put in a position of power.  We read in John 19:8-11, “When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid; And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer. Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee? Jesus answered, THOU COULDEST HAVE NO POWER AT ALL AGAINST ME, EXCEPT IT WERE GIVEN THEE FROM ABOVE: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.”  The Lord Jesus knew that wicked Pilate was given his position of power by God to fulfill His purposes.

We also read in Romans 13:1, “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: THE POWERS THAT BE ARE ORDAINED OF GOD.”  I take great comfort in knowing the Lord is in charge and will do His will and put into power the ones that He will use for His own holy purpose.  I often pray for our leaders, as the scriptures instruct us to do.  I suggest we all pray for those in power.  (CC)  (642.2)
