Is God the Father Jehovah? Or is the Lord Jesus Christ Jehovah? Or is the Holy Spirit Jehovah?
As we shall see, Jehovah is one of the names of God and God is Jehovah. We shall also see that God is “One God who subsists in three Persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.” Thus the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are Jehovah.
In Exodus 6:2-3 we read, “And God spoke to Moses, and said to him, I am JEHOVAH. And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, as the Almighty God; but by MY NAME IS JEHOVAH I was not made known to them.” (This is quoted from the DARBY translation; other translations rendered “Jehovah” as “LORD” with capital letters.) God is now revealing to Moses His special “Personal Name” of Jehovah which He would use from this point on in relation to Israel. We see this truth in Exodus 3:13-15, “And Moses said to God, Behold I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say, What is His name? What shall I say unto them? And God said to Moses, I AM THAT I AM. And He said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel: I AM hath sent me unto you. And God said moreover to Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel: JEHOVAH, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you. THIS IS MY NAME forever.”
Now that we have established the fact that God is Jehovah, let’s look at references that prove that the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are all called God. In John 1:1,14, 18 we read, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the FATHER, full of grace and truth…No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten SON, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.” These verses teach us clearly and emphatically that the FATHER and the SON are both God. The SON (also called the WORD, who is God) became flesh to manifest the FATHER (who is God) to the world. Since they are both God, they are both JEHOVAH! In Acts 5:3-4 we are taught that the Holy Spirit is God. Those verses read, “But Peter said, ‘Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit…You have not lied to men but to God.” So, the Holy Spirit is God and thus He is also JEHOVAH!
There are many people who deny that Jesus is God/Jehovah. The Jehovah’s Witnesses are notorious for denying this. But there are two passages which prove, beyond a shadow of doubt, that Jesus is Jehovah. I will now quote Isaiah 42:8 from the DARBY version: “I am JEHOVAH, that is My name; and MY GLORY WILL I NOT GIVE TO ANOTHER, neither my praise to graven images.” God/Jehovah is teaching us here that He will never share His glory with another; in other words, with someone He has created. He alone is God and He alone deserves praise from those whom He has created. Now let’s read John 17:5 where we see Jesus praying to God the Father, “And now, O Father, GLORIFY ME TOGETHER WITH YOURSELF, WITH THE GLORY I HAD WITH YOU before the world was.” As we saw earlier, the only begotten Son had become flesh (a true Man) in order to manifest the Father to the world of men, but now He is going back to the Father in heaven and He asks that “the glory He had with the Father” be resumed. In comparing this with Isaiah 42:8 it is abundantly clear that JESUS IS JEHOVAH, for Jehovah has never, nor will He ever, share His glory with another, yet the SON did share this glory with the FATHER from all eternity. I once asked a Jehovah’s Witness missionary to read those two verses from their own translation (where “LORD” is translated “Jehovah” in Isaiah) and then I asked him to explain them. After reading them he paused for a long 2 minutes and then turned to me and said, “I have never compared these verses before and I simply cannot explain them. They do seem to teach that Jesus is Jehovah.” (DO) (587.5)
