I think you may be thinking of 1 Corinthians 10:13 which says, “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”

What temptation that the Apostle Paul refers to here is not quite certain. It is likely that he is referring to such temptations that would, in their circumstances, have a tendency to cause the Lord’s people to forsake their allegiance to the Lord, and to lead them into sin. These could be either great persecutions, or troubles on account of their testimony for the Lord.  Or they might be the various attractions and allurements which were all around them from the prevalence of worldly lusts or idolatry. The temptations might be the open attacks of their enemies, or the sneers and the contempt of notable and important people of influence. The intent of Paul clearly is to show them that, if they were faithful, they had nothing to fear from any such forms of temptation, but that God was able to bring them through them all.  Notice that the Lord does not promise to TAKE AWAY temptations but will bring us through the temptations and allow us to be ABLE TO BEAR THEM and benefit from them.  We read in Romans 5:3-5, “And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.”  To add to that, we are assured in Romans 8:28, “And we know that ALL THINGS WORK TOGETHER FOR GOOD to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

The Bible is so clear that the Lord never tempts us to sin as we read in James 1:13, “Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man.”  While the Lord may “try” us, He never tempts us to commit sin.  Temptations to sin come from the tempter…Satan.  When Satan tempted the Lord Jesus in the wilderness, he is actually referred to as the tempter.  Matthew 4:3 says, “And when THE TEMPTER came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.”  Satan is also referred to as the tempter in 1 Thessalonians 3:5.  Temptation to sin comes from Satan and the Lord is always there to strengthen us and bring us through these temptations. We do not rely on OUR strength, but on the Lord’s omnipotence.

So, what type of temptations do we bear that could come from the Lord?  James 1:2-3, “My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.”  Since the Lord does not tempt us to sin, these temptations are given to us to make us stronger.  When the Lord puts our faith to the test, that results in giving us patience.  Oh, how we need that in our lives!

Whether we are tempted by the tempter to ruin our testimony and bring dishonor to the Lord, or if the Lord, in His perfect and holy will determines to try us so that we might be strengthened in order to serve Him greater…one thing is certain, “GOD IS FAITHFUL.”  He is constantly working to draw us nearer to Himself.  He that is faithful has promised us in John 14:18, “I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.”  He has also promised us in Hebrews 13:5, “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”  (CC)  (604.2)
