Good question!  Let’s begin by reading Genesis 4:23-24, “And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt. If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.”

Let’s look at a few things we have in the Bible that tell us about Cain after he killed his brother, Abel.

  • Genesis 4:11, “And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand.”  For the terrible crime of killing his brother, the Lord cursed Cain.  It should be noticed that the first man ever born (Cain) was the first murderer! (Read verses 11-14).
  • Genesis 4:15, “And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.”  The Lord pronounced a curse on anyone who would kill Cain.
  • Genesis 4:17-18, “And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch. And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech.”  This shows us that Lamech was the great, great, great grandson of Cain.
    • This is NOT the same Lamech that is written about in Genesis 5:1-25.

Now let’s look at a few things that are not spoken of in the Bible.

  • We are not told how Cain died.
  • We are not told who it was that Lamech killed.

To say that Lamech killed Cain is mere speculation and there is absolutely no profit in speculating about things the Bible does not tell us.  Perhaps Lamech did kill Cain, but we really have no way of knowing that from the Bible.

Deuteronomy 29:29 tells us that, “The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.”  There are some things the Lord simply doesn’t tell us.  We do well not to dwell on these things, but we are profited when we study God’s Word to learn the things He wants us to know.  (CC)  (599.4)
