What an interesting question.  This chapter, like chapter 25, is a song of praise, in which thanksgivings for temporal and spiritual mercies are beautifully given…praise for the Lord’s faithfulness and mercy.  Verse 1 says, “IN THAT DAY shall this song be sung in the land of Judah; We have a strong city; salvation will God appoint for walls and bulwarks.”  What day is that?  It is the day of the Lord’s glorious appearance at the end of the Tribulation Period.  We read in Isaiah 25:6-9, “And in this mountain shall the LORD of hosts make unto all people a feast of fat things, a feast of wines on the lees, of fat things full of marrow, of wines on the lees well refined. And he will destroy in this mountain the face of the covering cast over all people, and the vail that is spread over all nations. He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the LORD hath spoken it. And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us: this is the LORD; we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation.”  What a wonderful day of deliverance that will be for the nation of Israel.  Praises will ring out from this redeemed and grateful remnant people as they are restored to their own promised land.

The gates are opened wide to receive “the righteous nation which keepeth the truth.”

At that time, the redeemed nation of Israel will rejoice in the great blessings of the Lord.  Isaiah 26:3 says, “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.”

It may be that the KJV is not extremely clear to the casual reader in this instance.  It is the Lord who keeps those in perfect peace who have faith in Him.  Let’s consider this verse according to how the Amplified Bible presents it, “You will keep in perfect and constant peace the one whose mind is steadfast [that is, committed and focused on You—in both inclination and character], Because he trusts and takes refuge in You [with hope and confident expectation].”

I think it would be helpful to break this verse down to get a good understanding of its meaning.  Let me point out here that although the fulfillment of this portion will be realized when the Lord Jesus returns to establish His kingdom on the earth, we might also experience this portion in our own lives when we know and walk in the truth of the Lord Jesus Christ.

THOU WILT KEEP HIM IN PERFECT PEACE – It is encouraging to see that the literal translation here is, “Thou wilt keep Him in peace, peace.”  Peace, here, is a word repeated, showing this indescribable peace that belongs to the Lord’s people. There is no peace apart from the Lord Jesus.  Those who seek peace without the Lord continuously fail.  Often, they will claim peace as a comfort, but that is a lie.  We read of such people in Jeremiah 6:14, “They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.”  It is only those redeemed people of God who truly know Him and His “peace, peace.”  The Lord’s words to us before He went to the cross were, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” (John 14:27).  As believers on the Lord Jesus, He keeps us in His perfect peace.

WHOSE MIND IS STAYED ON THEE BECAUSE HE TRUSTETH IN THEE – To those who have fixed their minds on the things of the Lord, those who are faithful to Him, the blessings flow from Him.  When our desire is to know the Lord and live for Him, He is pleased, and He delights to meet all our needs.  We read in Psalm 112:7-8, “He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD. His heart is established, he shall not be afraid, until he see his desire upon his enemies.”  Surely, this speaks of what is available to us when our hearts are fixed, or stayed, on our loving Savior.  He freely gives us His peace, even when the world has no peace at all.

We are able to fix our eyes upon the Lord because we TRUST HIM.  Dear fellow believer, we can absolutely trust the Lord in all things.

  • The Lord will never lie to us. (Titus 1:2).
  • The Lord loves us dearly. (John 3:16).
  • The Lord always does what He promises to do. (Romans 4:21).
  • The Lord only wants good for us. (Jeremiah 29:11).
  • The Lord will never abandon us. (Hebrews 13:5).
  • The Lord will never stop loving us. (Romans 8:38-39).

So, can we trust God for everything?  In light of all that we have just had before us, how can we not trust Him?  How can we consider these few attributes of the Lord and not put our lives and eternity in His capable and loving hands?  May we all be able to say as David said in Psalm 91:2, “I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.”  (CC)  (581.6)
