You used the word ‘liberal’ to describe the church you are currently attending, so I assume that means their teachings are liberal, and you do not agree with them.  The concept of fellowship is found in being with those that you can agree with in their practices and teachings.  We have this important question asked in Amos 3:3, “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?”  Truly, we cannot walk with those whose beliefs and belief system is too far from what we believe and teach.

The work of the Holy Spirit is to teach us the truth of the Bible.  The Lord Jesus tells us in John 16:13, “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, HE WILL GUIDE YOU INTO ALL TRUTH: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.”  God’s Spirit will ONLY teach us what is true!  Why is it that we often find that we do not agree with one another if we are seeking to obey the Lord?  It could be that we are at different degrees of maturity and understanding.  It could be we are holding on to traditional teachings instead of allowing God’s Spirit to teach us.  It could be we simply do not like the sound of some teachings or doctrines and therefore, we reject them.

Should you seek out a church that is more in line with your beliefs?  I do want to point out that the ground for true fellowship is not that we agree with each other, but that we agree with the Lord and what He gives us in His Word.  Here is true fellowship.  Here is strength and comfort…following the Lord together according to His truth.  The Lord will NEVER teach us anything contrary to His Word.  He will NEVER teach one person something and teach someone else something different.  The Lord’s desire is that we be truly united according to the truth of His Word.  We read of that in Ephesians 4:13, “Till we all come in the UNITY OF THE FAITH, and of THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE SON OF GOD, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ.”

I suggest that you and your spouse pray together and ask the Lord where He would have you to go to fellowship with other believers.  Ask Him to lead you along the path of truth and find your fellowship with those who are likewise seeking the Lord’s truth.  We are exhorted in 2 Timothy 2:22, “Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.”  We are instructed to run away from youthful lusts (you do not have to be a youth to have youthful lusts).  In our attempt to please the Lord we should follow righteousness, faith, love, and peace.  The general meaning here is that we are to practice all that is good and honorable. We are to practice righteousness, or justice and fairness, in all our dealings with men; faith, or fidelity in our duties; and love to all men.

We are not to seek to do these things alone.  Rather, we are do these things “with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.”  We are to seek to honor the Lord and minister to others in fellowship with those of like mind…those with a pure heart.  Who has a pure heart?  Those who simply desire to follow the Lord with a clean, undivided heart towards Him.  One who desires to know the Lord and His Word and allows the Spirit to lead him/her “into all truth.”  I pray the Lord will lead you to a group that truly wants to grow in the Lord according to His Word and desire to fellowship with other believers walking that same path of agreement so that you might truly walk together in true fellowship.  (CC)  (588.6)
