Was Abraham the first prophet on earth?
Well, my dear friend, Abraham can be considered to be a prophet, and also he can be said to be the first patriarch of the Jewish family. Some Bible scholars do consider Abraham to have been the first prophet on the earth, however, I do personally think that Enoch, who was the seventh after Adam must be considered to have preceded Abraham in the role of a prophet, prophesying about the judgment of God which will one day come upon the ungodly of the earth. In Jude, verses 14-15 we read, “Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him,” (NKJV).
But now, my dear friend, I write the following for any who might read this who is as yet not saved. Enoch prophesied about the “great and terrible day of the Lord (also read Malachi 4:5; Joel 2:31), and this describes a day of judgment to come upon a sinful world. In Acts 17:30-31, the Apostle Paul gave the Greeks a similar message at the Areopagus which should be taken very seriously by all the people on the earth today who are as yet unbelievers, saying: “Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.”
This message refers to our Lord Jesus Christ who came into the world to save sinners (John 3:16; 1 Timothy 1:15). God sent His only begotten Son into our world to save us from judgment through faith in the finished work of Christ Jesus on the cross of Calvary. In the times in which we live, many are asking what is happening in our world, seeing all the violence and even the severe weather events, fires, earthquakes, and diseases. These unpleasant events can serve as a sign to all that this great day of judgment is yet coming, and I believe it may well happen very soon. Therefore, all who are still unsaved are called to turn to Christ while there is yet time. Those who refuse this warning will experience God’s righteous judgment. And what will our earth do with this warning? The unbelieving of the earth must either trust in Christ as Savior and Lord, otherwise, the ungodly will know Him as their judge. The good news is that Christ Jesus loves you and wants to be your savior if you will but heed His call to repentance and faith. In John 5:24 we read: “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.” (SF) (668.1)
