Was Jesus raised in His glorified body?
Yes, my dear friend, When the Lord Jesus was born at Bethlehem, He was not only true God but also true man, having a body of flesh and blood, just like yours or mine, with the only exception being that He was the very Son of God, and thus there was no sin in Him (Hebrews 4:15; 10:5). But, when our Lord Jesus rose from the dead on the third day, His body was a glorified body, and it was no longer subject to the physical limitations of this world, no longer limited in movement by physical barriers, and though He was able to eat and drink, He was no longer dependent upon breathing, eating or drinking for life. Christians, those who are saved by grace through faith in the finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ on our behalf on Calvary’s cross, will, when caught up to be with the Lord, have bodies “like unto His glorious body” (1 Corinthians 15:51-52). The bodies that we now have are made of material suitable to life only on this earth. We must be changed to have bodies like that of our risen Lord Jesus, bodies suitable to life in Heaven. When Christ returns to the clouds (1 Thessalonians 4:16-18), we will be changed and given new bodies made suitable for heaven as we read in 1 Corinthians 15:53, “For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.” See also 1 Corinthians 15:51-52. And, what would this “glorious body” refer to? William MacDonald in his Bible Commentary on Philippians 3:21 said of our bodies when we are taken up: “…The Lord will transform it into a body of glory. The full extent of the meaning of this we do not know. It will no longer be subject to decay or death, to the limitations of time or of natural barriers. It will be a real body, yet perfectly suited to conditions in Heaven.”
As to the glorified body of the Lord Jesus, I’ll direct your attention to several verses. First, in John 17:5 we read: “And now, O Father, glorify thou Me with Thine own self with the glory which I had with Thee before the world was. MacDonald in his commentary on this verse states: “Before Christ came into the world, He dwelt in heaven with the Father. When the angels looked upon the Lord, they saw all the glory of Deity. To every eye, He was obviously God. But when He came among men, the glory of deity was veiled. Though He was still God, it was not apparent to most onlookers. They saw Him merely as the carpenter’s Son. Here, the Savior is praying that the visible manifestation of His glory in Heaven might be restored. The words “glorify Me together with Yourself” mean “glorify Me in Your presence in heaven. Let the original glory which I shared with You before My Incarnation be resumed.” Now, let’s consider the glory of the Son of Man on the earth at the Mount of Transfiguration as revealed in Matthew 17:1-2, “And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, And was transfigured before them: and His face did shine as the sun, and His raiment was white as the light.” I believe that this shining glory will be seen by all in very evident power and majesty when Christ returns to the earth (Revelation 1:7). But how did our Lord appear in those 40 days between His resurrection and His ascension into heaven? In the Gospels, Christ Jesus often, but not always, appeared like He had looked before He was crucified, as the disciples were able to recognize him (John 20:16;19). But sometimes He shielded His identity for a time before revealing Himself to His disciples (John 20:15; 21:4; Luke 24:15-16). After His ascension into heaven, we see the Lord Jesus in His Heavenly glory in Acts 7:56; Acts 9:3-6; Revelation 1:13-15). All of these are the Lord Jesus in various forms, but all in His glorified body.
In summary, I believe that the body of our Lord Jesus Christ after He rose from the dead was His glorified body, a body no longer limited by the physical limitations of earthly bodies. This is the very same body with which He ascended into Heaven, the glorified body which we have seen in the Scriptures above, and which we will see when we ourselves are promoted to glory (Revelation 22:4). This which I have described is the same body which when Christ returns to the earth after the Great Tribulation, every eye shall see, even they that pierced Him (Revelation 1:7). (SF) (651.4)
