To answer this question, one MUST quote the scriptures that teach us “who God is.” There are simple and clear scriptures that teach us who God is. Here are some of the most important passages that I would use.

Genesis 1:1 says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” It is quite telling that the very first verse of the Bible (God’s “Revelation to Mankind”) teaches us that GOD IS THE CREATOR (of the heavens and the earth, and as we read the rest of the chapter we see God is the Creator of all living things, including the vegetable kingdom, the animal kingdom, and of mankind). Men deny this truth and God will judge them for rejecting the plain truth that “God created all things by His power.” Romans 1:18-20 declares, “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, for God has shown it to them. For since the CREATION OF THE WORLD His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His ETERNAL POWER AND GODHEAD, so that they are without excuse.”

Psalm 90:2 states, “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.” He we learn in simple terms that GOD IS ETERNAL. He had NO BEGINNING! He will have NO END! From eternity to eternity, HE IS GOD!

Genesis 1:26 reads, “Let US make man in OUR image, according to OUR likeness.” Now let’s read Matthew 28:19 where Jesus said, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing t hem in the NAME of the FATHER and of the SON and of the HOLY SPIRIT.” We are taught here that “God is one God who at the same time subsists in three Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.” Because of this truth we refer to God as the “Holy TRINITY” (which means “Three in One”).

1 John 1:5 says, “God is LIGHT, and in Him is no darkness at all.” In 1 John 4:8 it says, “God is LOVE.” These describe GOD’S NATURE. LIGHT refers in scripture to HOLINESS and PURITY! He declares in 1 Peter 1:16, “I am HOLY” which means there is NO SIN in Him. But God is also LOVE and His perfect love has been revealed to the world in the sending of His Son to die for sinners. “In this the LOVE OF GOD was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. In this IS LOVE, not that we loved God, but that He LOVED US and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins” (1 John 4:9-10).

There are other passages which reveal to us “who God is” but these are the most vital for us to see and believe. I will mention in closing that we referred, in Romans 1:20, to “His invisible ATTRIBUTES” and it went on to say “His eternal POWER.” This means God is OMNIPOTENT, which means “all-powerful” (see also Psalm 147:5; Jeremiah 32:17; Hebrews 1:3, and Revelation 19:6). God is also OMNISCIENT, which means “all-knowing” (see 1 John 3;20; Psalm 139:1-6). And God is also OMNIPRESENT, which means He is “present everywhere” (see Psalm 139:7-8; Jeremiah 23:23-24).  (DO)  (671.3)
