What will our spiritual bodies be like? How will they function?
My dear friend, I can only tell you what I find in the Scriptures, and that is very encouraging indeed! We have many Scriptures which give us an idea of what our glorified bodies will be like. In Philippians 3:20-21 we read: “For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.” We know from John 14:1-3 and 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18 that when the Lord Jesus returns to the clouds, He will call forth those true believers who are in the grave and as well, those who are yet alive at His coming, and we will be changed and will be caught up to be forever with the Lord (1 Corinthians 15:51-53).
In 1 Corinthians 15:53 we read that “For this corruptible must put on incorruption….” I believe we see a similar thought in 2 Corinthians 5:1 which says, “For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.” This clearly indicates that our current bodies which are made of earthly stuff and quite mortal, will be fashioned like the Lord’s glorified body in that we will no longer be subject to sickness, death or decay. Then, how else might our bodies be like that of our Lord? In John 20:19-20 we read: “Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst…He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.” The doors were locked for fear of the Jews, so there was no way anyone could enter into the room, and yet, the Lord Jesus suddenly appeared among them. He was fully recognizable as Jesus including the marks of His crucifixion yet visible on His hands and feet. This body was clearly the same Lord who had died on the cross, but His body was no longer subject to the limits of physical barriers, time or space. What’s more, He was no mere spirit, but rather He had flesh and bones and could even eat (see Luke 24:37-43).
In summary my dear friend, in 1 John 3:2 we read: “Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.” I believe that in this verse, we see that what our bodies will be like in the glory is not specifically revealed, but we know that we will be like the Lord Jesus in His glorified body. I believe that when we are removed from this sinful earth, we will be conformed to the likeness of Christ, purified without any vestiges of the old nature which was in our earthly bodies, and we will have glorious new bodies which are incorruptible. Thus, in heaven, we will no longer be subject to decay or death, we will be free of the presence of any sin or temptation, we will be able to eat but will not need to eat or breathe to remain alive, and our glorious bodies will not be restricted to any of the physical limitations of this world. But, best of all, we shall ever be with the Lord! (SF) (663.6)
