We often sing in our Sunday School class: Read your Bible, pray every day, and you’ll grow, grow, grow.  When we read our Bibles, we receive nourishment from the Lord.  We actually FEED upon His Word so that He might instruct us, guide us, strengthen us, etc.  We need that every day.  Just as our bodies need to be fed every day, our souls need to be fed every day.

The Lord, Himself, implores us to be students of His Word.  We read His words in John 5:39 where He says, “SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.”  He longs for us to know Him better and to know His ways.  To do that, we need to be students of His Word.  We are instructed in 2 Timothy 2:15, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”  As believers, it is so important that we become familiar with God’s Word so that we can discern how to properly understand and apply it to our lives.  When we do that, we have the Lord’s approval.

We read in Acts 17:10-11, “And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews. These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and SEARCHED THE SCRIPTURES DAILY, whether those things were so.”  The Apostle Paul commended the believers from Berea because they searched the scriptures EVERY DAY!  They realized their need of daily Bible reading to show them the truth so they could discern what was true and what was false.  Of course, this is not simply light reading of the Bible, but intense study of His Word, comparing scripture with scripture so that we might know the proper interpretation of His Word.  As we study the scriptures, the Holy Spirit will give us His understanding as we read in 1 Corinthians 2:13, “Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.”

The Lord warns us in 2 Timothy 4:3-4 saying, “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.”  Dear friend, that day is upon us.  We need to know the scriptures so that we’re not taken off guard or knocked off balance or led astray by false teachers. We need to feed from the scriptures every day to be ready to defend against those who refuse to receive the scriptures and refute its truths.

The Lord Jesus quoted Deuteronomy 8:3 in Matthew 4:4 by saying, “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”  We NEED the Word of God.  It is that which gives us strength to live for the Lord in a world that has refused His faithful teachings.  2 Timothy 3:16 assures us that, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”  The Bible is ‘God-breathed’.  He inspired different men to write His mind and has preserved His Word for us today.  May we all gain a sense of how important and perfect God’s Word is.  May we gain a sense of our great need for it so that we might “walk in truth”.  Psalm 86:11 instructs us to say, “Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.”  Should we read our Bibles every day?  Indeed, we should.  We should read it several times a day, even as we feed our bodies several times a day.  (CC)  (621.2)
