Did God ever show mercy to Lucifer when he fell?
We will begin by quoting the only passage in the Bible that mentions the name Lucifer and we shall see that God has not shown any mercy to him. We will also examine other scriptures that refer to who Lucifer became after his fall and there too we do not see one ray of hope for this rebellious creature who dared to defy God and tried to dethrone Him and sit on His throne. I will now quote Isaiah 14:12-15, “How you are FALLEN from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are CUT DOWN to the ground, you who weakened the nations! For you have said in your heart: ‘I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation on the farthest sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.’ Yet YOU SHALL BE BROUGHT DOWN TO SHEOL, to the LOWEST DEPTHS of the Pit.”
There are commentators who believe that Lucifer is none other than the “King of Babylon” who is no doubt the main person being judged by God in this chapter (see verse 4). However, I believe that Lucifer is, as another has said, “the power behind the throne of the Babylonian king” and God has revealed him in these verses as a mighty angel who, through pride, had a great fall. In later scriptures we see that his name was changed to “Satan,” for the Lord Himself speaks of his fall and refers to him as Satan. “And He said to them, ‘I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven’” (Luke 10:18). This verse may also refer to Satan’s “future fall from heaven” as we see in Revelation 12:7-9, “And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer. So the great dragon was CAST OUT, the serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was CAST TO THE EARTH, and his angels were cast out with him.”
If we were to study all the references to the Devil and Satan, we would see clearly that after his initial rebellion against God, he continued to rebel against God. He is the “serpent who deceived Eve by his craftiness” in the Garden of Eden (2nd Corinthians 11:3 with Genesis 3:1-6). This led to the “fall of Man” and all the corruption, violence, misery, and sorrow that we see in the world today. He is called the “father of lies” and a “murderer from the beginning” in John 8:42-44, for his lies to Eve brought death to all men (Romans 5:12). He continues to perpetuate his lies to bring men into bondage and into rebellion against God (see Ephesians 2:2 and 1st John 3:8, 10-12). His hatred of God and man will go on to the very end of time until he is finally “cast into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:7-10). Because of his great PRIDE and REBELLION, there is “no mercy for him.” He was (it seems) the most beautiful and wisest angel in heaven who occupied the “highest place in heaven next to God” (Ezekiel 28:12-15), yet he will (as we saw in Isaiah 14:15) “be brought down to Sheol, to the LOWEST DEPTHS of the Pit.”
Let us close by looking at Hebrews 2:14-16, “Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage, For indeed He DOES NOT GIVE AID TO ANGELS, but He does give aid to the seed of Abraham.” We learn two truths in the passage: 1) The Son of God became a Man in order to “give aid to men” by dying for them on the cross so they could be saved and delivered from the Devil’s power; and 2) Jesus Christ did NOT “give aid to angels” for He did not die for the Devil and his angels (those angels who followed him in his rebellion against God). No mercy will be shown to them because of the greatness of their fall! It should also be said that if people reject God’s mercy by refusing to believe on Jesus Christ as their Savior, they too will share the fate of the Devil and his angels. “Then He (Jesus Christ) will say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire PREPARED FOR THE DEVIL AND HIS ANGELS” (Matthew 25:41).
