Do angels/demons (fallen angels) have emotions?
Yes, they do. I will quote two passages which show us that “unfallen angels” have emotions and then two passages which reveal emotions in “fallen angels.”
Job 38:4-7 says “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth…Who determined its measurements?….Or who stretched the line upon it? To what were its foundation fastened? Or who laid its cornerstone, when the morning stars sang together, and all the SONS OF GOD SHOUTED FOR JOY?” (NKJV). God reveals to Job in this portion that the only creatures present when He created the earth were ANGELS and He informs him that the angels celebrated God’s power and majesty in creation by “shouting for JOY.” These are definitely UNFALLEN ANGELS who worshiped God and gave Him the glory He so richly deserves.
Luke 15:10 declares, “Likewise, I say to you, there is JOY in the presences of the ANGELS of God over one sinner who repents.” Here too we see unfallen angels standing in awe of God and exhibiting the emotion of JOY. We saw in Job that they “shouted for JOY” when God created the physical universe. Here they are “filled with JOY) when God creates a New Life (a “New Creation”…see 2nd Corinthians 5:17) in a lost and spiritually dead repentant sinner.
James 2:19 states, “You believe that there is one God, You do well, Even the DEMONS believe—and TREMBLE.” Fallen angels have rebelled against God but they still FEAR Him. We see another example of this FEAR in demons in Mark 5:7, “And he (an “unclean spirit”) cried out with a loud voice and said, ‘What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God that You DO NOT TORMENT ME.” In Luke 8:31 we also learn that “they begged Him that He would not command them to go out into the ABYSS.” They know that He is more powerful than them and that one day they will be cast into a bottomless pit for 1,000 years along with Satan (see Revelation 20:1-3). After that they will be cast into Hell (Revelation 20:10). So, they have every reason to FEAR and TREMBLE!
Revelation 12:12 & 17 read, “Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the DEVIL has come down to you, having GREAT WRATH, because he knows that he has a short time…And the DRAGON (Satan…see verses 7-9) was ENRAGED with the woman, and he went to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.” Here we see the DEVIL in an emotional state of ANGER. He knows that his time of rebellion is short and he is bent on wreaking havoc on earth to the very end.
These passages teach us a very valuable lesson about angels and emotions. We learn that “unfallen, holy angels” have POSITIVE EMOTIONS and that “fallen angels” have NEGATIVE EMOTIONS. I believe we all know why this is. The unfallen angels are SINLESS and the fallen angels are SINNERS. What a difference SIN makes in the lives of a rebellious creature! Sin does NOT result in JOY, but in FEAR and ANGER. (380.5) (DO)
