Well, thank you, my dear friend, for this very good question. We know from the Scriptures that God is love (1 John 4:8-10; John 3:16), but we must not make the mistake of thinking that because God is love, that He will ignore sin and the need to judge sin. The Scriptures clearly indicate that God does in fact express righteous anger against sin and ungodliness. For example, the Lord Jesus demonstrated righteous anger in Matthew 21:13-14 when He turned over the tables of the money changers, saying that they had turned the temple of God into a den of thieves. The important thing to know is that God’s anger is always a righteous anger. Human beings express anger which is tainted by sin and is generally not righteous, because we of Adam’s race are all sinners as we read in Romans 3:23, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”  James 1:20 says, “…for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.”

Psalm 145:17 tells us that, “The LORD is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works.” He demonstrated His love and grace in sending the Lord Jesus Christ to save us from the penalty of our sins (1 John 4:10; Romans 5:6-21). He is just in saving sinners who repent and trust in Christ (Romans 3:26; 4:5).  Psalms 145:8 tells us that God is “slow to anger, and of great mercy.”  And yet God does express righteous anger against sin and ungodliness.  In fact, Psalm 7:11 tells us that, “God judgeth the righteous, and GOD IS ANGRY WITH THE WICKED EVERY DAY.”

So, to enlarge on God’s righteous anger, let’s turn to the Scriptures. In Hebrews 3:8-11 we see an example of God being angry with the children of Israel in the wilderness, “…Therefore I was angry with that generation, And said, ‘They always go astray in their heart, And they have not known My ways.’ So I swore in My wrath, ‘They shall not enter My rest.'” Romans 1:18-19 tells us, “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness…” Colossians 3:5-6 admonishes those of us who are Christians, “Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience…” In Paul’s presentation to the Greeks in Acts 17:30-31 we read that God has appointed a day when His righteous judgment will be executed upon ungodly men, and that this judgment will certainly come, so now is the time for men to repent of their sins . The various prophesies of Scripture clearly speak about a time of judgment, which I believe will be during the Tribulation period. These prophesies also speak about the soon return to the earth of our Lord Jesus Christ to overcome all His enemies, then He will set up His Millennial kingdom. Revelation 16 speaks about the seven bowls of the wrath of God which will be poured out upon the earth during the tribulation period, and verse 19 tells us about “the cup of the wine of the fierceness of His wrath“ (see also Jude, verses 14 and 15). Isaiah 63:3-6 speaks about this judgment as the winepress of wrath.

In conclusion, God does get angry, but this is only ever a righteous anger directed at sin and ungodliness. There is the wrath of God to come in judgment upon the earth, as covered in Revelation 16 and many other prophesies, and there is the final judgment at the Great White Throne spoken about in Revelation 20. But is God ever angry with true Christians today? God’s relationship with His children today is like that of a father.  He disciplines His children in love as we see in Hebrews 12:6-11. Verse 6 says: “For whom the LORD loves He chastens and scourges every son whom He receives.” My dear friend, are you a child of God? If not, you can be by receiving Christ Jesus as your Savior and Lord. John 1:12 tells us, “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name…”  (SF)  (722.6)
