For the past three weeks now, I have always been waking up at exactly 2 AM every night. Does this have any spiritual interpretation?
If you were to Google “Waking up every night at 2 a.m.” you would find many links to articles attempting to explain why you are experiencing this. Most of the articles go into some detail about the “witching hour” (or the “devil’s hour”), a term that refers to “a time late at night when the powers of darkness are believed to be the strongest.” Those who believe this say that your “soul awakens from a dream because your mind is clear and creative as well as receptive to higher messages or guidance.” This begs the question, “Where do these supposed ‘higher messages and guidance’ come from?” Some will say, “From ‘spirits on the other side’ (I suppose they mean the departed spirits of loved ones and friends). Others believe they may come from a “demon” or “witch” who are more active during times of darkness. And then there are those who advance New Age theories and believe that waking up at 2 a.m. means you are “waking inside of the Earth’s energy field which has a strong magnetic relationship with our bodies through our chakras” (the “chakras” are supposedly seven centers of spiritual power in the human body). According to this belief, if the “crown and root chakras” are blocked one can experience physical and emotional issues with one of those issues being “sleep disturbances.”
The Bible-believing Christian should either ignore or reject these views, for they are not supported at all in the Word of God. We do know that Satan does seek to communicate with people to “blind their minds to the gospel of Christ” (see 2nd Corinthians 4:3-4) and he will use any form of deception to that end. We also know, from Ephesians 6:12, that there are “principalities…powers…rulers of darkness and spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places” that are acting on Satan’s behalf. They “may” indeed try to communicate with people in the so-called “witching hour” if those souls are open to receiving messages from them. And there are many people throughout the world who are following New Age religions who believe they can communicate with “spirit guides.” I firmly believe that any communication they receive are from “demons” masquerading as “spirit guides or extraterrestrials.”
Thankfully, all true believers in the Lord Jesus Christ have the power of the Holy Spirit indwelling them and can overcome any of Satan’s minions. In 1st John 4 we are told of “spirits” who are not of God and in verse 4 we read, “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” The “powers of darkness” can no longer hold us captive for through faith in Christ (1st John 5:1-5), and through the power of the Holy Spirit, the chains that once kept us in bondage to Satan have been broken.
So, to answer your question directly, if you are a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ you should avoid the teaching of the “witching hour” and “New Age religious mysticism.” They have nothing to do with you waking up at the same time every night. For some reason the Lord is allowing you to wake up in the middle of the night. Perhaps He wants you to pray for someone, including yourself. You may recall when the Lord Jesus was about to pray in the Garden of Gethsemane in the middle of the night, He told His disciples to “Sit here while I pray” (Mark 14:32). Yet when He returned to them, He “found them sleeping” (verse 37). He then told them, “Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation” (verse 38). One Christian writer said on the subject we are considering today, “We should see the early morning hours not as a ‘witching hour’ but as a ‘watching hour.’” This would be my advice to you, dear friend. Do not let this “2 a.m. awakening” frighten you or cause your mind to drift into unbiblical theories; let this time be used to read the Bible and “think on spiritual things from the Lord” (Philippians 4:8), and to “pray for those in need and for yourself as you are preparing for another day to serve Christ.” (DO) (586.5)
