How can I find peace in my heart for the things that happened in my life? I read the Bible and pray for healing.
I don’t know what has happened in your life that has robbed you of peace, but the Bible does give the solution for one “finding peace in their heart.” There are two kinds of peace that we will consider: 1) Peace WITH God, and 2) the Peace OF God. As we will see, if you are a true believer in Jesus Christ, you already have “peace WITH God” but now you need the “peace OF God.”
In Romans 5:1 we read, “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have PEACE WITH God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” If you read the first 3 chapters of Romans you will see that “there is none righteous, no, not one” (3:10). This means that are men are sinners and thus we read that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (3:23). No one is perfectly sinless and God, who is holy and sinless, demands perfection if one is to be declared righteous in His sight and fit for heaven. But thankfully God has provided a way for men to be righteous and thus we read in 3:21-22, “But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnesses by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God, THROUGH FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST, to all and on all who believe.” Jesus Christ did a work on the cross (by taking man’s punishment for sin…DEATH and JUDGMENT) and the one who believes in Christ and His finished work on the cross is declared righteous by God. We read of this in verse 26, “to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.” If you have taken your place before God as a lost sinner and put your trust in Jesus Christ as your Savior, God has JUSTIFIED you and you have PEACE with God. This “peace” occurred the moment you believed and never has to be repeated, though it should “give your heart peace” every time you think of what Christ did for you and the relationship you now have with God “through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Now we look at the “PEACE OF God” by considering two passages. The first one is John 14:27 where Jesus told His disciples who believed in Him, “Peace I leave with you, My PEACE I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” Notice, Jesus speaks of PEACE twice in this verse. I take it the first peace He refers to is the peace we just spoke of; PEACE WITH God through faith in Christ’s work on the cross where He “made PEACE through the blood of His cross” (Colossians 1:20). But then He says, “MY peace I give to you.” This peace was something that Jesus Himself experienced when He walked this earth. Despite Him being “despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief” (Isaiah 53:3), He had a “peace in His heart” that could not be disturbed by the hatred of men or the sad circumstances of life. What was it that gave Him perfect peace? Ah, it was by His “communion with His Father!” He was constantly in prayer with the Father and the peace He experienced was “the PEACE of God.” Now we who are children of God (through faith in Christ Jesus…see Galatians 3:26) can experience the same peace that Christ had as we remain in communion with God through prayer. We read of this in Philippians 4:6-7, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the PEACE OF GOD, which surpasses all understanding, WILL GUARD YOUR HEARTS AND MINDS THROUGH CHRIST JESUS.”
This, dear friend, is how you can “find peace in your heart!” If you are not a believer in Christ, I pray you will “believe on the Lord Jesus Christ” (Acts 16:31) and then you will have “peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Then you can take the things (trials and burdens) that are happening in your life to God in prayer and you will have “the peace of God that passes all understanding” and this peace “will guard your heart and mind through Christ Jesus.” (DO) (643.1)
