I believe that I was cursed in my mother’s womb as I was not planned, and she tried to abort me. My life has been totally different to that of my siblings. Most of my relationships have been abusive and I have never known true love. On her deathbed she told my brother that she had sold her soul to the devil at the age of 16. Many have prayed for me, but things are still going so wrong in my life and I don’t believe that the curse has been broken. Please let me know your learned answer to this.
I am sorry to hear that you have had so many hardships in your life and that there seems to be no end to them. I am personally not convinced, based on my knowledge of Scripture, that you were “cursed in your mother’s womb.” You seem to connect that with your mother “selling her soul to the devil at the age of 16,” but if that were the case, why aren’t your other siblings experiencing the same “cursed life?” I would like to show you a few passages dealing with those who were “cursed from the womb” and some who thought they were “cursed the day they were born” and we will see that their experiences are NOT the same as yours. We will also consider some verses which show that “everyone who has been born into this world is under the ‘curse of sin’.”
In Deuteronomy chapters 27 & 28 the Lord pronounced BLESSINGS on the children of Israel if they were OBEDIENT to His commandments and CURSES on them if they were DISOBEDIENT. For the “curses” that God uttered see 27:14-26 and 28:15-44, and then God said, “So all these CURSES shall come on you and pursue you and overtake you until you are destroyed, because YOU WOULD NOT OBEY THE LORD YOUR GOD BY KEEPING HIS COMMANDMENTS and His statutes which He commanded you.” What is relevant to your question is 28:18, “Cursed shall be the offspring of your body” (NASB). This means that “their children” would also suffer because of “their disobedience to God’s commandments.” History shows us that the children themselves were also, like their parents, disobedient to God’s commands and thus the curse that started with their parents was passed down to their children BECAUSE OF THEIR UPBRINGING. In other words, the children had terrible “role models” for parents and they ended up “imitating their sins” which brought about the curse. This passage of Scripture applied strictly to the nation of Israel who had been given the Ten Commandments so one could not apply it to themselves today.
Two godly men in Scripture “CURSED the day they were born.” In Job 3:1-3 we read, “After this Job opened his mouth and CURSED the day of his birth. And Job spoke, and said: ‘May the day perish on which I was born.” In Jeremiah 20:14 Jeremiah said, “CURSED be the day in which I was born! Let the day not be blessed in which my mother bore me.” In both cases these men had been experiencing unbelievable misfortunes. Job had lost his cattle and servants (1:14-17), his children (verses 18-19), along with his health (2:7-8). Jeremiah was in prison at this time for faithfully proclaiming God’s Word to a disobedient nation (Israel) and was filled with sorrow and tears. Both men were “righteous and godly men” yet they had to suffer more than most people will ever suffer. They were brought so low that they “CURSED the day they were born” and probably were thinking, as you are, that they were “CURSED from their mother’s womb.” But there is no mention of their mothers cursing them or anyone else. They were suffering “in this life” because of “faithfulness to God.” God was ALLOWING SATAN to afflict Job and God was ALLOWING FELLOW-JEWS to afflict Jeremiah. We could say that their seemingly “cursed life” was because of SIN; not personal sin committed by them, but sin that was inherent in Satan and the Israelites. Both men will one day be amply rewarded for their faithfulness to God and for their willingness to “suffer for doing what was right.”
The moment SIN came into this world through Adam’s act of disobedience (Romans 5:12), the human race came under a CURSE. God CURSED the serpent who tempted the woman and God CURSED the woman and Adam for succumbing to Satan’s temptation and disobeying God (Genesis 2:15-17; 3:1-6, 14-19). This CURSE was then passed on to every human being, which means we were all “born in sin” (Psalm 51:5), we all “practice sin” (Romans 3:23), and we all are “under the penalty of sin” (Romans 6:23 & Hebrews 9:27). Some may suffer more adversities and trials than others, but all of us suffer because of SIN.
Yet God, in love for the sinner (you and me!), sent His Son to set us free from the “CURSE of sin.” In obedience to His Father, the Son of God became a Man to take man’s place in death and judgment (see John 3:16 with 1 John 4:9-10). On the cross Jesus was MADE A CURSE FOR US! The Apostle Paul taught this to those who had believed on Jesus Christ as their Savior: “Christ has redeemed us FROM THE CURSE of the law, HAVING BECOME A CURSE FOR US (for it is written, ‘CURSED is everyone who hangs on a tree’” (Galatians 3:13). I don’t know if you have trusted in Christ for salvation, but if you haven’t, I would plead with you to “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31). If you do believe on Him, you will be born-again (John 3:1-8). You will have the Holy Spirit to empower you to live for Christ (Ephesians 1:13; Acts 1:8). You will have Christ as the Object in life (Galatians 2:20 and Philippians 1:19-21). And you will have the “blessed Hope” of being with Christ for all eternity (John 14:2-3; Philippians 3:20-21; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; and Titus 2:13). You will still have trials in this life, but God will give you the grace to endure them (1 Corinthians 10:12-13). (DO) (623.3)
