Yes, there is! We will look at several examples from Scripture which teaches us this. The first one is Psalm 2:1-6, “Who do the nations rage, and the people PLOT A VAIN THING? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers TAKE COUNSEL TOGETHER, against the LORD and against His Anointed, saying, ‘Let us break Their bonds in pieces and cast away Their cords from us.’ He who sits in the heavens SHALL LAUGH; the LORD shall hold them in derision. Then He shall speak to them in His wrath, and distress them in His deep displeasure.”

This passage looks on to the end of the Great Tribulation (see Matthew 24:15-21 and Daniel 12:1) when the Lord Jesus shall come as “King of kings, and Lord of lords” to establish His kingdom (see Revelation 19:11-16). We read in Revelation 19:19, “And I saw the beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies, GATHERED TOGETHER TO MAKE WAR AGAINST HIM WHO SAT ON THE HORSE and against His army.” These armies on earth will “plot a vain thing” and “take counsel together” against Christ, seeking to prevent Christ from setting up His kingdom and bringing them into subjection to Him. Yet God WILL LAUGH at them for their foolish rebellion against Him and His Son and as we read in Psalm 2:5 “He shall speak to them in His wrath and distress them in His deep displeasure.” Their puny strength will be crushed immediately without a fire being shot from them (see Revelation 19:20-21).

Another passage which teaches us this truth is Psalm 37:12-13, “The wicked PLOTS AGAINST THE JUST, and gnashes at him with his teeth. THE LORD LAUGHS AT HIM, for He sees that his day is coming.” Here we see wicked men planning to destroy righteous men, yet God LAUGHS at their wicked plans, knowing that their “day of judgment” is coming. Their feeble attempts to overcome His people will be met with His righteous wrath upon them!

We see the same thing in Psalm 59:1-8 where David prayed to the Lord about his enemies who “lie in wait for my life; the mighty gather against me” (verse 3). But David knew His Lord would come to his defense and thus he could say, “But You, O LORD, SHALL LAUGH AT THEM; You shall have all the nations in derision” (verse 8)

We will cite one more example from Proverbs 1:24-26 which reads, “Because I have called and you refused, I have stretched out my hand and no one regarded, Because you DISDAINED ALL MY COUNSEL, and would have none of my rebuke; I also WILL LAUGH AT YOUR CALAMITY; I will mock when your terror comes.” When men reject “God’s counsel” (His precious Word!) and “take counsel against Him,” He in turn will “LAUGH at their calamity” (when His judgment comes upon them).

It should be said that God’s LAUGH is not to be taken literally, as if God is laughing in malice and taking pleasure at seeing men judged for their wicked plans against Him. Rather, God’s LAUGH is to be looked at figuratively, for it speaks of how foolish and ridiculous it is for PUNY MAN to reject and to rebel against the OMNIPOTENT (all-powerful) GOD.

May we all take this lesson to heart, for even believers may make plans that are contrary to God’s will and if so God, as a faithful Father, may come in to discipline us in order to restore us back to fellowship with Himself. I will close with words of wisdom on this subject from James 4:13-15, “Come now, YOU WHO SAY, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit’; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead, YOU OUGHT TO SAY, ‘If THE LORD WILLS, we shall live and do this or that.’”  (479.3)  (DO)
