Before we consider your question about a “second chance at the Second Coming of Christ,” it MAY be that your grandmother “did trust in Christ as her Savior” before she died. You say, “to my knowledge she had not accepted Him, but unless you were with her shortly before she died, she may have “repented and believed on Him” in her last hour. Though it is rare, a “deathbed conversion” is not impossible. I’m sure you are aware of the conversion of the penitent thief in Luke 23:39-43. In the last few hours of his life, he turned to the Savior in faith (see verses 40-42) and the Lord told him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise” (verse 43).

If she did not turn to the Lord Jesus in repentance and faith (at some point before she passed away), there will NOT be a “second chance” for her to be saved. When a person dies, their spirit departs from their body and goes out into eternity. If they were saved their spirit is “absent from the body, present with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:8). If they were not saved, “their spirit is in torment” where they will await the final judgment and then be cast into the lake of fire for their rejection of Christ (Revelation 20:11-15). The Lord Jesus told of two men, a beggar named Lazarus and a rich man, who illustrate this truth. “So it was that the beggar died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off and Lazarus in his bosom” (Luke 16:22-23). If we were to read on, we would see the rich man asking Abraham for mercy and for water to cool his tongue (verse 24). But Abraham went on to tell him, “Between US and YOU there is a GREAT GULF FIXED, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, NOR CAN THOSE FROM THERE PASS TO US” (verse 26). This a very solemn and teaches us that one’s “eternal destiny” is determined “in this life.” Once death occurs, their destiny is FIXED. There is no “second chance” to be saved. This is why we (believers in Christ) tell the sinner, “Behold, NOW is the accepted time; behold, NOW is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2).

Let me assure you that IF your grandmother died without Christ, the Lord had given her every possibility to be saved. God wants everyone to be saved, as we see in 1 Timothy 2:3-4, “For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, WHO DESIRES ALL MEN TO BE SAVED, and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” Jesus pleaded with sinners to “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Yet when men rejected His offer of salvation He had to say, “But YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO COME TO ME that you may have life” (John 5:40).

I want to close with one more thought to comfort you. Some believe we (believers) won’t be happy in heaven if some of our loved ones aren’t there. What does Scripture say? Ah, the Bible assures us in Psalm 16:11 that WE WILL BE HAPPY for we read, “You will show me the path of life; in Your presence is FULLNESS OF JOY; At Your right hand are PLEASURES FOREVERMORE.” There will be no SADNESS or TEARS in heaven, for we read in Revelation 21:4, “And God will wipe away every TEAR from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor SORROW, nor CRYING.
