I believe the verse you are thinking of is Matthew 10:8. Let’s read verses 5-8. “These twelve Jesus sent out and commanded them, saying: ‘Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter a city of the Samaritans. But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And as you go, preach, saying, the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. FREELY YOU HAVE RECEIVED, FREELY GIVE’” (NKJV).

The Lord Jesus had just “called His twelve disciples to Him” (verse 1) and “gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease” (verse 2). Having done so, He then sends them out to the “lost sheep of the house of Israel” to use the power He had given them. The miracles they would perform would not only be used to “bless mankind,” but also to “serve as a sign to confirm their message that “the kingdom of heaven was at hand.” They were NOT to charge anyone any money for any of these blessings of healing. Why? Because the “gifts of healing, cleansing, raising the dead, and casting out demons had been FREELY GIVEN.” It’s that simple; they would never have been able to do one miracle if Christ had not GIVEN THEM TO ABILITY TO DO SO, period!

This is a lesson for all believers today, for we all have received certain abilities from our risen Lord with which to serve Him. We read in Ephesians 4:7, “But to each one of us GRACE WAS GIVEN according to the measure of Christ’s GIFT. Therefore He says: ‘When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, and GAVE GIFTS to men.” We read of some of those gifts in verse 11, “And He himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers.” We see more of Christ’s gifts to believers in Romans 12:6-8, “Having then GIFTS differing according to the grace that is GIVEN TO US, let us use them: If prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.” There is no thought whatsoever of “charging those whom we serve money for services provided,” for like the disciples who were given power to serve the Israelites with “physical blessings of healing,” we too have been given gifts to serve all men with “spiritual blessings from God’s Word.”

The Apostle Paul was thoroughly convinced of this truth and thus he could say, “Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers (servants) through whom you believed, as the Lord GAVE TO EACH ONE” (1st Corinthians 3:5). Later, he was happy to remind the believers at Corinth that when he preached the gospel to them, he “presented the gospel WITHOUT CHARGE” (9:18). Like Paul, our souls should be convinced of this truth….FREELY YOU HAVE RECEIVED, FREELY GIVE. It is shameful that some Christians preach the gospel (in a church building or on the radio or tv) and at the end of their message they plead with their audience to give them money. This gives their hearers a “mixed message” and could lead them to think they can “purchase salvation.” Yet all believers know that salvation is the “greatest gift of all” that could not be earned or purchased. “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the GIFT OF GOD, not of works, lest anyone should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9). “Ho, Everyone who thirsts, come to  the waters; and you WHO HAVE NO MONEY, come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk WITHOUT MONEY AND WITHOUT PRICE…Incline your ear, and come to Me. Hear, and your soul shall live” (Isaiah 55:1 & 3).  (DO)  (567.1)
