Should we as Christians believe in luck?
This question relates to the sovereignty of God. One of God’s attributes is that He is sovereign. This means that He has absolute authority over the universe and is in control of everything. We read in 1 Timothy 6:13-16, “I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who testified the good confession before Pontius Pilate, that you keep the commandment without stain or reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, which He will bring about at the proper time—He who is the blessed and only SOVEREIGN, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone possesses immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see. To Him be honor and eternal dominion! Amen” (NASB). Therefore, God is sovereign.
God’s sovereignty is beautifully described in Ephesians 1:11-12. “In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of Him who WORKETH ALL THINGS AFTER THE COUNSEL OF HIS OWN WILL: That we should be to the praise of His glory, who first trusted in Christ.”
It is also true that mankind has free will. We read in Revelation 22:17, “WHOSOEVER WILL, let him take the water of life freely.” God has given mankind free will to make choices, including whether or not to accept Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord. We have read Scriptures that make it plain that God is sovereign and that mankind also has free will. It appears that both of these cannot be true. However, we know that they are both true because God says so in His Word.
Since God is sovereign, luck does not exist. God is in control of all things. Therefore, Christians should not believe in luck. Praise God that we do not have to depend on luck for the events of our lives! We have a loving God who has a wonderful plan to bless us “with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ” (Ephesians 1:3). He then gives us strength to bring glory to Him each day.
