Well, my dear friend, the simplest answer to your question is to be found in Genesis 2:22-24 where we read, “Then the rib which the LORD God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. And Adam said: “This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.” Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh,” (NKJV). In the times in which we are living, when sexual identity is being questioned by some, it is good to remember that God created man and also woman. It was male and female that God created, and this cannot be changed even by the will of the Supreme Court. Thus, I believe that marriage as discussed in Genesis 2 directly specifies that this union is between a male and a female as husband and wife. Thus, according to God’s design and will, marriage is a union of one man and one woman, a biological male and a biological female. I believe therefore that in God’s eyes, it is quite wrong for two men or two women to be united in a civil union even by the laws of an earthly government.

In verse 24, we clearly see that it is God’s intention that this union between a man and a woman is to be a permanent union (Matthew 19:6). Furthermore, marriage is to be honorable and pure, without adultery (Hebrews 13:4). Also, in Genesis 2:24, the man is to leave his own nuclear family and cleave to his wife, which suggests to me that it is God’s plan that the two come together in order to have children of their own, thus creating a new family unit. I believe this unit was purposed by God, the creator of all things, in order that children might be produced by the married couple, and that these be raised within this male-female family structure.

Some of my reasons for saying all of the above can be found in Genesis 1:27-28 where we read: “So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth….”. Thus, in these verses from Genesis 1 we have identified once again that the union we are talking about is between a man and a woman, and that the purpose of the union is to raise a family.

My dear friend, I believe that the purpose of the family unit is not only to raise up children, but also to teach the children obedience to the Word of God so that they will do well in life and be honoring to the parents and to God (Exodus 20:12; Ephesians 6:1-4). In Ephesians 6:4 we see that these children are not only to be raised but are to be brought up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord (see also Proverbs 22:6).  (SF)  (692.1)
