The dictionary definition of abortion is: The deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy.  Interestingly, the medical definition of abortion is: The removal of pregnancy tissue, products of conception or the fetus and placenta (afterbirth) from the uterus.  Notice how the medical definition of abortion does not use the word “human.”  It refuses to humanize the unborn baby.  It is simply considered to be fleshly matter.

What does the Bible say about the unborn child?  Let’s read the words of David in Psalm 139:14-16, “I will give thanks to You, because I am awesomely and wonderfully made; wonderful are Your works, and my soul knows it very well.  My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in secret, and skillfully formed in the depths of the earth; Your eyes have seen my formless substance; and in Your book were written all the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there was not one of them.”

Doesn’t this show clearly that the unborn child is alive inside the mother’s womb and is seen by God?  In fact, even before birth, this unborn child is called “awesomely and wonderfully made.”

The prophet Jeremiah understood this truth and we read the words of the Lord to him in Jeremiah 1:5, “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.”  He was chosen and ordained as a prophet while he was yet unborn and still in his mother’s womb.

Let us consider John the Baptist while he was in his mother’s womb.  Luke 1:39-41 says, “And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda; And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost.”  This unborn child was referred to as a babe while in Elisabeth’s womb.  This babe leaped even before he was born into the world.  In each of these incidents, it is manifested that David, Jeremiah, and John were alive before being born.  They were, indeed, UNBORN CHILDREN.

Having established the fact that in the womb, these unborn children are alive…we now consider the Bible’s stance on murder, for taking their lives away from them is surely murder!

  • Exodus 20:13, “You shall not murder.” (NASB).
  • Leviticus 24:17, “Now if someone takes any human life, he must be put to death.”
  • Genesis 9:6, “Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.”

What is my position on abortion?  Abortion is murder and is therefore condemned by God and His Word.  Life is precious and whether that life has extended beyond its mother’s womb or not, the Lord loves that person.  Psalm 127:3 says, “Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.”  May we value each life and not be taken in by the world’s cruel treatment of the unborn.  (CC)  (573.4)
